8 year old looking for his first deer. Need help
« on: April 16, 2010, 07:08:05 AM »
Some may remember I had this exact thread a while ago.  Things have changed.  I am now not hunting with my father and brother and am free to explore the Northeast corner of the state for whitetails.  We are going during the general season.  We have private property in GMU 260, Foster Creek availible but, from what I've read here, the NE corner for whitetails is a better option for a kid.  Based on the 2010 regs, the special permits we're putting in for are:

Antlerless in GMU 108, 111, 113, 117

2nd deer in GMU 260

Youth antlerless in GMU260

These seem to be the only availible special permits where we'd be hunting.  4th of July weekend, we're going scouting.  We will spend a day or 2 on the private property in GMU 260 and then have about a week to explore elsewhere.

The property in GMU 260 is 640 acres but, it's not the best territory.  Lots of rock, little vegetation and no fields.  This is why I'm looking elsewhere too.  Does anyone have any tips on getting my son his first deer in the NE corner?  I have heard that there were OTC antlerless tags in this area but, I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Not looking for honey holes, just some general ideas.  If anyone has private property up there too, I'd be willing to deal for permission to hunt it.  PM's welcome.

Thank you.

Theres alot of state property in that area. A doe should not be hard to find, especially becuase you'll probably run one over on your way up there.... Look around the Colville, Addy, and Deer Park areas for state land..

I have property in Colville..  if your looking for doe's.. I generally have plenty of them... Have bucks also...  but never garentee any. If your 8 year old is hunting them, I believe they can take either sex beginning of the seaosn...  ya might check...  been so long since I've hunted deer myself ever since I've gotten into upland and waterfowl hunting. Just let me know and I can set ya up.

It looks like the antlerless season for youth is the last 4 days of the early season:  Oct 21-24. This is also for hunters over 65 and disabled hunters. Regular season is Oct 16-24. This is for units 101-124.

The units south of Spokane are open the entire early general season for does, for youth, seniors, and disabled hunters. That would be these units:  127-142, 145, 154, Deer Area 1010, 172-178.

DoubleJ there is tons of public land all over the NE.Get a good map or two (most county websites can be very helpful) and start looking. If you can not find what you are looking for, hook up with Wayne. I met him last spring, he is a great guy and since he offered take him up on it. I may do the same thing with my kids

PM sent.  Thanks for the offer.  Anything I can do earn that spot on your property?

There's tons of whitetail does in 178 and usually it's not too difficult to get access to private land down there either when it involves kids hunting. Let me know if you need some input down there in the blues.
