Am I reading this wrong???
« on: April 23, 2010, 07:39:05 AM »
So while trying to decide what special tag I wanted to put in for under the new system I was searching for the archery choices. Well as I'm sure you have seen there are not any real Archery specific choices. The seasons do match but they are now labeled "Quality Hunt". So this is my question. Does this mean that for the tags that are for Sep. 1-19 or anytime in September for that matter? Are those now open to everybody? The top of the page says that you can only use the weapon that coinsides with your tag. So if you have a rifle tag does that mean you get to hunt bulls in September. Have they completely forgotten about archery hunters. Do we no longer have our own season or choices? Please if anybody can clear this up for me that would be great. I'm getting a little bit pissed off thinking about my elk season being interupted by rifle and muzzle loader blasts.

The column "Tag required to apply" designates the type of hunting implement.  "F" is modern firearm, "M" is muzzleloader, and "A" is archery. "E" is Eastern Washington, "W" is Western Washington.   "EA" means "Eastern Archery", "WF" means "Western Modern", and so forth.  When you purchase an elk tag, you must specific (a) Eastern or Western, and (b) Modern, Muzzleloader, or Archery.  You are then limited to which permit hunts you can utilize.

What Bob said.  Look at the ones with the "EA" in the  tag required column and they correspond to the September hunts.  The rifle and muzzleloader hunts are later in September and October.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

And after doing all of this to get a simple elk tag, then attend college for approx 8 years come out with a doctorate and re write it to make it just a little easier for us all to understand.

Just wait until just before the application deadline in May, when everybody is lined up at Wal-Mart purchasing licenses, tags, and applications, and asking the clerks to explain all this new stuff.   :o   :yike:

I should just go hang out Wal-Mart at that time, just for the entertainment. Or heck, even Cabelas. It's going to be total choas.   :chuckle:

If I was a vendor, I would be really pissed off at this crap. To damned complicated. If you hit a sales counter to buy something like this, the vendor gets squat for all their hassle.

Wildlife staff should have to sell to the public. Then, they would make the regs alot easier to understand and tags/permits quicker to purchase.

I agree. The limited training that one employee receives (and then has to share with other employees) is not enough to keep up with the changes. I feel bad for the kid behind the counter.

I remember one year I had to fill out the paper ap for the clerk. It was a "sporting goods" store in the old South Sound mall that sold bikes and tents and for some reason hunting licenses. :dunno:

You don't have to choose east/west with the multi season elk, you can hunt both.  That is one of the things that makes this tag so cool.

No. This year you have to choose North side or South side. :chuckle: Just kidding. It definately would not suprise me though.

Are they going to draw the tags in the order of the categories?  So if I get drawn on the quality, I drop out for the others and gain points for them and only lose my quality points?

The order doesn't matter. You can draw a permit in all the categories you apply in.

Yes. It helps if you use the correct terms. You don't draw a tag, it is a permit. You can only have one tag but you can have multiple permits. Once you "fill" your one tag, you are done. You can participate in all of the special permit hunts that you have drawn, until you use your tag (if you ever do.)

Yes, and I'm sure there are lots of people who have yet to even find out about the changes. They will find out while standing in line at Wal Mart on May 26th, and won't have a clue as to what applications, or how many, they should purchase.  Don't be surprised if the WDFW extends the deadline this year.   :bash:
