Alaskan Authentic Ulus
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:23:25 AM »
Hey guys,

spent some time in Fairbanks, and I've seen authentic Ulus in use, but I'm still kicking myself for not picking one up when I had the opportunity.

Anyone here know a contact.  These knives are really the cats meow for just about everything you need a knife for.  Feel free to PM me.

hey guys thanx for the links...

But I guess I wasn't clear... (happens alot around me...)  I've seen the production ones... I'm actually looking for a contact that actually makes them from scratch.  Sorry if I wasn't clear, I have one contact in Alaska, that I've got to reconnect with, but I'm always looking for new ones also.

If you're going to be using the knife in the kitchen, I would strongly suggest getting one of the wooden bowls to match the knife.  Extremely handy for chopping herbs and such.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

The reason, I'm looking for handmade/authentic...  :) this suckers gonna replace my field knife!!!  Saw some natives using them while butchering/skinning a moose, and thought it was the slickest thing!!!  Course, I'm sure some of the efficiency could be from lots o' practice also...

Rainshadow1 on here has made some. You should check with him or look at his website.

Like this,  might not be authentic, but it is hand made :). I made this one out of a square (4"x6", ok rectangular) stanley scraper and a piece of hickory ( old shovle handle) with brass pins shaved from a fire hose fitting. Not the most beautiful piece of craftmanship but it holds a pretty good edge. I built it during some slack time at work (we'll keep that part quiet) , jokingly so I could skin my first legaly killed sealion with it. Well I haven't killed a sealion yet, but I did use it to skin two different elk last year, hence the blood rust on the blade, and it did a great job.

I picked one up when on our Alaskan Cruise for my self and a buddy. Never used it, it just sits on the fire place mantel.

Should use it some day  :dunno:

I made this one for WolfWoman who lives in AK...

I've done a couple production blades but won't liekly many more times, the 100% handmade is just too much better... not to mention cooler!

I have this blank available right now...

Handmade from ATS34 stainless, and is going to be a REALLY nice one. (Won't be inexpensive, but will serve for a couple lifetimes.) It'll shine up mirror bright, or I can blast it satin. Can grip it from plain to Uber-Fancy!

Let me know if you're interested, I probably won't do much grinding for some time, I'm SUPER busy right this minute, so I'm just going to be working out of my "Available Blades" for now. So this is the only Ulu blank for awhile.

The one pictured would go $170 with a stand or pack sheath. I can go lesser than that to about $150 for one piece scales, and the sky is the limit the other direction!

I only have the one. I can make another one later, but honestly it's looking like the middle to end of summer before I grind again.
