The birds seem to be a bit quiter this year. Past on a small jake/bearded hen(small bump?), called in a jake for my nephew. This year, like years past, I was calling in hens like crazy.
I have never brought a tom into shooting range, but I have had a flock of hens and jakes within inches of me. I have never shot a t bird. I always get hens and jakes in close, really close, but never a tom. they seem to stay out of range. Is this just my luck or could it be my calling?
This year a hen walked within ten feet of me before I could get my decoys out. Sh noticed that there was no hen there and jumped in a tree and started calling, loud. She was about 15 yards away from me. So I called back. Her and I kept at it for over a half hour. The whole time a tom was just over a small hill gobbling at us like crazy. The hen stayed with me and eventually jumped out the tree and walked away. What gives. I love hunting, but have decided that I am the worst hunter in the world.
