Hello everyone! Wanting to learn about Coyote hunting!
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:55:10 AM »
Hello
I am very new to all of this and am looking for help information and possibly a hunting partner.
I was recently informed that I hijacked a thread didn't mean too
was looking for some help on where to hunt. I have lived in
Puyallup,Wa for 7 years but never been east of Rainier. I have been hunting
west of Chehalis area for several weeks now 2 or 3 times a week using a hand caller
and electronic caller but nothing not even a return howl. Somewhat
fustrating people say East or use Atlas which I did purchase
but never doin this before driving 3 hrs to look around seems
like a lot of wasted gas. Not saying that I am not willing to put
inthe time and work to be good at this but a specific rd exit just something
in general to get started. Thank you to the person that mentioned
Yakima firing center but is that a public location? Was thinking of going to the area
west of Naches and east of Rainier??? Any opinions anyone
interested in teaming up with a greenhorn? I apologize forupsetting those of you
whom I offended buy posting to much on that thread.
Take care and good hunting!

Don't know of anything in that area, but if you ever head this direction let me know. Also I visit the Yakima Valley often to see my dad, I can let you know when I head that way and if you don't mind the drive there we can head to the Bickleton area or a few other spots.

I'm sure there are areas over there that have coyotes but I sure don't know, as I haven't lived on the wet side since 3rd grade. I'm sure there are guys that can get you headed in the right direction on the site, but I wuld also check out the other site turkey buster gave you. Good luck and shoot as many of those dogs as you can.

I am also a newbie to all this and trying to learn as much as I can. I think I'm gonna send in my application for the WWPHA this weekend and try & learn from some of those guys too. I'm also going to head back out to the Sultan/Index area this weekend and see if I can find one or two out there. What about rifles/scope setup? I was thinking about buying an inexpensive .17 cal bolt action rifle in either Mossberg or Savage and then putting a 4-14x40 Redfield Revolution or Simmons 4-12x44 Prohunter Truplex scope on it. Is that a good scope magnafication and is a .17 caliber a good varmit round? I have a S&W MP15 in .223 with 2-7x power scope and a few .22's as well as shotgun and 30/30 - but I kinda want an excuse to buy a new rifle!  ;) Plus I cant believe a .22 LR is a good round/rifle to hunt coyotes with, really? I thought maybe .243 but .17 ammo seems alot cheaper!

Your .223 is a great round and it sounds like you have a great set up to start with, the .17 is a bit light according to many that are serious coyote hunters.

Thanks, good opions on that thread. But yeah, thats pretty much what the guy at the gun shop told me about the .17, kinda light. Might not drop them in their tracks everytime but would work. He seemed to favor the 22/250 or even the .243, he also told me to think about being able to use it on bigger game if so choose in the future. Kinda liked that little Ruger .17 with carbon barrel, maybe I'll think of another excuse to buy it.....like I really need an excuse anyway.... Thanks again!

Hey on a side note - is it legal/useful to use some sort of bait like chicken meat or something to get them interested in a scent - - -  other than mine??

:)You can bait coyotes, might work??? a 17HMR is way too small, coyotes are tough as hell. use your 223 or buy what ever but respect the animal! You want a quick one shot kill at what ever range you can shoot.

Hey guys glad to see people are conecting for information. That being said I use a .223 either my Mini14 or my AR15 both are great. Ruger never jams no matter what ammo you feed it and recoil is very light speed is good and it will pit them down.  So I have been meeeting different people thru the site ans and have learned alot already so I thought I would share a few things and see what you guys think. Most important has been smell using something to hide human scent I was told ribbing leaves and such on clothing will help I got some wipes from Cabelas and wiped down clothes. Next is cammo I use all that I can and try to sit in front tree or in brush to conceal myself a little better and put E-caller about 30 yards away. I also use Randy Anderson Big Dog it can replicate several different types of distress call and comes with a cd for examples worth the $25 at Cabelas for me anyway. Last I have been told wind stay down wind as much as possible and that of you can when you set E-caller put away from use a tail of some sort tied to end of fishing pole and atatch dental floss to give them something to fixate on along with sound. Do not hunt in heavy rain everything is trying to stay dry. So that about covers it so far. I will say that most people on this site are friendly and helpful although there are a few that have hackmamn been doing it so long it seems the Modo of (there is no such thing as a dumb question does not apply. That's too bas because it takes a lot for any man to ask for help and to be ridiculed it pretty sad thing to do. Now that being stated 99% have been great. I do recommend checking out wwphaa.com new association but great guys and will answer all your questions. I beleibe they are having a meeting Saturday the 8th at Cabela's in Lacey,wa starting at 12pm. I am sure they would love to meet some news guys and share some information. Might even find a hunting partner. Anyway that's all for now. Thanksfor the responses keep them coming and Good Hunting!!!

Thanks for all info. What kind of wipes did you get to cover the scent? I've never heard of the wipes or rubbing leaves thing but I am very new as well. But I've been wondering about my scent and ways to hide/mask it though but it seems like it would be damn near impossible! One of the main things I'd also like to know is WHERE in the hell to go look for them!?! I went out to Sultan tonight and called and looked for 2-3 hours and again, not a damn thing. I dont even know if they are in the area I went, off Sultan Basin Rd, but I talked to a guy out there who says he goes there all the time for target shooting and he's never seen a coyote but he had seen a bear. (in hindsight I guess it wasnt a good idea to go where people a re shooting alot - there was nobody shooting there when I was there but I'm sure all the animals avoid the area like a wildfire) So I'm always wondering if they are even there. I made sure to set up along the tree line downwind and downhill of a large clearing, but I'm sure I wasnt very 'stealth' going for my setup, I'm sure I 'skylined' myself but I'll be the 1st to admit I dont know what the hell I'm doing! Also wondering if I am doing the calls right too, I have no idea..... :dunno: I bought the Hot Dog & Lil Dog, I also have a Yipper Yapper and Primos Still Cottontail call and a small assortment of rabbit/fawn distress calls and also two Cass Creek Handheld Electronic Predator Calls. I mostly called with the mouth calls but I used the e-calls a couple times. Man, I definitely was not prepared for or appreciate the fact of how challenging it would be - only 2 times out and I was a bit discouraged tonight on my way home. I was thinking it'd be a lot easier than it is so far! Going to Tri-Cities at the end of the month and I hope I have better luck over there!

Hey I understand about not knowing where to go it is very hard for me as well. The funny thing is when you ask for a specific place people make fun of you. People feel you should pit in time looking around I understNd the thought process but it would be nice to get specifics. So far I can tell you that West of Chehalis near Bunker Creek Rd there are some logging roads that will take you to some areas that have all the right small game rabbits squirrel etc... But the brush is very thick hard to see them bit I have been told that area is good for Bobcat as well although seasonal. I was up in near Green Lake recently near the rainer entrance that has been washed out again high altitude and timber area but I spotted 3 that day just couldn't get shot. Finally I beleive that east of Rimrock outside of park south desert area west of Yakima is suppose to be full of coyotes although never been there. Planning on it next weekend. That is best I can do to help been a struggle for me as well and I have used a ton of gas driving around but that is part of the game. Have found some really good areas for deer season so it pays to explore. I have also been told to stop at farms and ask if they have coyote problems but I hear that is not easy since so many people take advantage once inside and don't follow rules so people have been hesitant to let strangers on their land. Feel free to private message me if you are looking for hunting partner also try and make wwpha meeting today at Cabela's 12pm Lacey,WA
Thanks and good hunting everyone!!!
