Where do i find Blacktail ? Other than in the woods!! LOL

I am just wondering what kind of terrain to look in. A few of the areas i hunted last year got logged in the last month or so over in Kitsap county. I am wondering if it would be worth hunting a fresh clearcut or would it be too soon. What do you look for when scouting a potential hunting spot ? Ravines , Creekbeds , Edges of a old clearcut ? Thanks a bunch.

Going by your title to this thread I thought you were talking about the magazine- you know, the blacktail one that is not talking about deer.

I would spend some time scouting pre season to see what deer are going to like the open. I found that a clearcut 4 or 5 years old or had the new trees up about 5 feet tall was prime for hunting the wetside deer.

The fact is there are up to 150 deer per square mile in the better areas. you dont see them because there smart and the big ones are sneaky as hell.

So anywoods can have abundent Deer. Some areas have bigger genetics. But finding those areas takes a little luck and some scouting time. Big bucks usaully work less than a square mile of core area there whole life.

It sounds like you need to work on what to look for and determine were there necesities are in that area.

For instance, did you know they dont travel the same trail in both directions?

They generally bed on the top 3rd of the hills or ridges with wind at there back.

It can take a big buck 30 minutes to move 30 yards when poking its head out to feed.

They will most likey hold and be still unless you get too close. Rather than busting out.

Scott Haugen was one of the speakers at the sportsman's show in Puyallup recently and I picked up his book. The book talks about 6 different areas for blacktail from coastal to high country. Scott bases a lot on science and includes his experiences. I think it is a very informative book and worth reading.

I moose hunted in the Huckleberry Unit (121) a couple of years ago and one of the local guys swore that there were blacktails running all over the place.  He'd seen a bunch of bucks, even!  You should check north of Spokane.   

Sometimes there is just no convincing people when their mind is set on something.  My hunting partner wanted to beat the crap out of the guy and I was just laughing.

the thing i wonder about those book does that have alot to with the wa deer or cali deer iv'e hunted oregon wa cali and the deer act different in every state just curios

Two thumbs up to both books listed above.  I've read Iversons book and am working on Haugens which I just picked up at the Sportsman's Show last week.  I got some great insight into blacktail habitat a couple of seasons ago.  I was hunting late archery elk in the snow and followed some blacktail tracks.  The friggin tracks went right into the thickest nastiest brush in the area.  My partner and I couldn't believe it.  I'd have never guessed that they would have been hiding in that stuff.  We couldn't figure out how they got into it.  I never would have believed it had I not seen the tracks myself leading right into the pucker brush.

Iverson's book is really good.  If you get a chance, check that one out.
