Counting points on elk?
«
on:
February 20, 2008, 07:53:07 PM »
Since we have a discussion ongoing about how to count points on deer, why don't we have one on how to count points on elk. I've always counted any point over an inch long as a point,5 by 5,6 by 6 etc. Some of my friends count 4 by 4 with double eyeguards etc. What is everybodys usual method?

Oh no. I dont think my finger can take another topic of this caliber. This seems to be a touchy one with some of the members. I do think in this case they all count. What do you think bone.

Doesn't that drive you crazy...I say you count it all. Most of my Lewis County friends use the 4 point with double eye guards. You just have to know your audience.

Maybe all antlers should be weighed or something, maybe displacement?
I have heard the ladies comment that it is all about displacement, not length or girth, but a combination of both...

While growing up it was allways a 3 point with doubles or 4 point with doubles. Only until the last few years have I herd people counting them all. Must be another regional thing. (I grew up in Lewis County)

The old timers use 4 over for a bull with 4 points over the eyeguards whether it be singles or doubles. If someone says they shot a 3 or 4pt I may ask if it is "over" but once they say 5 or 6pt I know what they are talking about.

I think saying its a 4x4 with double eyeguards is counting all the points.
I think why some people say it this way is there are a lot of 4 and 5 points killed that might not have points that match up perfectly. Say 3 on one side with one eye guard and 2 on the other side with double eyeguards. Yeah it's a 4x4 but not your typical one. Just makes it easier to know where all the points are I guess.

I can kind of see....kinda...see the talk about counting eye guards on a deer....but an Elk? No question they ALL count! Just can't see how people would call a 6x6 a 4pt. with double eyeguards??? How can a person not count antler of a foot long? Crazy....

Longer than an inch coming off the main beam or points is a point in my book. Basicly if it's a deduction I count it. I counted this years bull as a 6x7 and the point was just under an inch but I don't really give a *censored*, it's my bull.

East coast, most midwest count all points. West coast hunters usually count one side then the other.
Old school hunters do not count the browtines or eye guards. Those are the old boys I love to listen to as they will say I shot a 6X6 (really an 8X8) or 7X7 (9X9). The pictures are a freak of nature... They never have any interest in getting the racks scored.
My 2 cents.
