Walleyes, Pike and Brookies, oh my! ( And a few bear too)
« on: June 02, 2010, 07:40:40 PM »
Just completed a trip with my twin brother, who works in England, and his British friend Steve. We all flew back home to Wisconsin  and then we drove to Armstrong, Ontario and flew into the back country about 70 miles on a float plane for a week of fishing. Kind of a bittersweet trip as I have not been fishing with my brother for over 15 years and our father just passed away. My father used to take us every year up to Canada fishing.

So a few pics and am waiting for my brother to email me some pics too of big brook trout we caught up there. Used fly and spinning rods. Story to follow.

A few teaser pics:

We had a few visits from local bears.

One of them was a big boy. He seemed more interested in eating the the newly sprouted dandelions

The smaller bear brought 3 cubs with her

Nice fishing in Ontario, too bad they have made it very difficult and expensive to bear hunt, as well as eliminating the spring bear season.  We used to get a lot of bears near Ignace, ONT.  In fact, my parents are there right now at their cabin.

Sweet pictures. Looks like you had a blast. Was great you got to fish with your brother. I am planning on doing the same thing this year, all five of us have a little tournie. Have not fished with them for at least ten + years.

Awesome pics! I have never caught a pike, I think they look like such cool prehistoric fish. Great bears too. That first one looked none too happy to see you.

Congrats on a great time. I bet the brit loved it.

Cheers~

Ontario has a slot limit. Can keep from 12-18". Most walleyes we caught were over that. We caught a doz around 24-25 inches. 4-6 lbs.

Caught quite a few pike over 36 inches. Biggest around 42" I lost a huge one close to 50 " ( around 30lbs)

The Brit Steve broke his new Hardy rod ( $400 Brit quid- $500 American) on a big Pike. He was not happy. Overall he could not stop smiling during the trip. When he saw the bears he wanted to go out and pet them :o. I said probably not a good idea.

Fish count for 6 days was around 400 pike and walleye for 3 guys. A dozen Brook trout. My brother caught a brookie around 25-26 inches. Close to 7-8 lbs.

Ate walleye for lunch and dinner every day. Fried walleye, grilled walleye, stir fried, curried walleye, walleye chowder....

Gotta love it up there.  Great story and pics, always good to have family time.

I have spent a lot of time on the Manitoba and Saskatchewan border and had similar results to yours in Ontario.

Bummer about the bear season, Manitoba is still good for bears in the spring.

Have fun. Look for weed beds in 6-12 ft of water for the pike and wallaeyes. Walleyes love weed beds up there. Jigs, golden rapalas and  my secret lure I used last day to win the most fish tournament

Don't forget to fish drop-offs by rocky points. Pick up walleyes and big pike.

Have fun

Brother caught a big brookie on Fly.

The brook trout spend the winter in the lake and then make their way out to the Albany River system.
