Halibut Fishing Next Year (BAD NEWS)
« on: June 04, 2010, 05:54:18 AM »
Just read an article in the local paper that the 120 ft rule for bottom fish might apply to Halibut next year. :bash:

Think how great the "recovery" would be if they just outlawed fishing all together.

I don't understand the idea behind this. Why not have numerous openings scattered through out the year instead? You could fish as usual but with small openings scattered throughout the year it would better serve everyone. (Shut season down during spawning season though).

The restriction would probably be geared more towards rockfish recovery, not halibut recovery. Halibut populations are healthy as ever as far as I can read.

That is bad news because that means there will be more people to contend with in our 50-70' honey-hole.

Think of all the people who fish halibut out deep packed in close to shore, all that pressure in such a small area... I can't see how that's going to make anything better for the fish or the fishermen.

thats what i thought too, it's to protect the rock fish. if you accidentally pull one from 250ft while targeting halis, he's not likely to survive when you release him.
