bait/mineral lick

I've never done it before for blacktails but have seen a couple posts here about baiting and the concensus seems to be apples for bait...my question is that I've leased about 300 acres between hoquiam and humptulips and want to try to bowhunt this september for deer.  the piece i've leased is heavy timber on the edge of a real thick 8 foot tall "clear cut" that the deer seem to be moving through my piece going to.  There's not really any "trails" that they use to access the cut but am wondering if anyone has ever had any success with putting minerals out to attract them to or if I would be better off suited putting out trail cam/s to see where they are moving.  I have some apple trees in my backyard but they wont have fruit until latter this summer/fall and would like to get a jump on things.  I've never really sat on a stand before and am hoping to get your guy's input....

That is an apple in this dude's mouth.  Coyotes will eat as many apples as deer if given a chance.

I don't know how well they work for blacktails but the trophy rock works great for whitetails in Stevens county. Sunday afternoon I had 4 different bucks an 5 does (or small spike bucks....could have been both  ) come in to one I put out last year. They can go through them pretty fast but once they know they are there just keep them replenished and they will keep coming back.

Find a tree big enough to put up a tree stand. You put apples & cob out, they will come. Just keep them coming in, don't go days w/out putting apples out. Black tails seem to move a lot and feed where ever, so if you keep the food out they will make a habit of coming in.

Bears will eat cob and apples too, which can be a problem.

Scented? I don't believe so. I watched a show on how they get them. They are blasted from down in the earth. I believe they are all natural mineral. As for how long before they start getting hit I am not sure. I put some on my property in spring time and left them. a few months later when I went back they were getting hit on a reguler basis. Most will last about a year or so and when they are gone they animals will dig into the dirt to get what the rain took of of them. I have 3 out and replenish them every year.

Try a couple bags of deercain. Works for deer and elk and the bear and coyotes won't mess with it. I've had bear piss on my salt blocks if left on the ground. I usually secure them to a tree if I use the blocks.

germans usually place their salt blocks on top of a 3-4 foot pole. the deer usually end up licking the pole smooth long after the salt block is gone.

The fact is, 99% of "hunters" don't have the skills to actually stalk and hunt game animals. Even the books by "experts" are a big joke, filled with tips on tree stands and ground blinds. They have no idea how to tread quietly through the forest. Nor can they follow animal signs and tracks. It's a lost art, given up to lazy "hunters" who sit in a tree stand and put out a bushel of apples or a salt lick 75 yards away. Then they use their overly powerful super scoped rifle and just wait for the deer to come along. Their success rates reach near 100% every season. My success rate is less than 20%. My success in WA is at 0%. But for me it's about the hunt, the chase, and the thrill of being in the wilderness. I'm a hunter, not a killer.

I could take a deer every year if I wanted. I have had many in my sights that I could have shot, but didn't. Just knowing that I could have pulled that trigger is enough sometimes. But I won't take every fork horn I come across. Like I said, it's about the hunt, not the kill.
