Winners from 6 different divisions received prizes and cash ranging from five hundred to two thousand five hundred dollars.

Yea, Joel is a cool dude. He is a yelm cop and also serves on the swat team for thurston county. I use to shoot archery with him years ago. He is also a dead eye shot with the recurve and usually places in the top positions with recurve at most of the archery shoots. I know he is freinds with Joe out at Rainier Archery out on meridian.

He is a Pro Staffer for Rockie Jacobsen, so yep, he was using the Monarch & Rockies calls, the very stuff we use ourselves. These are the very products we use & carry for hunting here in ID

Incidentally, Rockie took 4th & his son Corey took 5th in a call off!

Hey there folks,

I didn't know people knew so many things about me.  This is the mysterious Joel Turner.  It is true, I was lucky enough to win the RMEF World Elk Calling Championship in the Professional Division this year in Reno.  I do use Rockie Jacobsen's calls for all of my cow calling.  I use several other calls for my bugling just to get some very specific tones that I think work well in the woods as well as on the stage.  As for the Pro Staff thing, I am not sure what will happen.  This is all very new and exciting for me.  I did a radio interview with Field and Stream Radio yesterday but I am not sure if it has aired yet.

It was very interesting reading about myself.  Even I learned a few things!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the acknowledgements and the congrats,

JT

Joel/Sniper10, congratulations on the win and welcome to the site.

I haven't heard of Field and Stream Radio.........what station is that on, or is it a satellite radio thing?
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Curly,

I don't know what station it is.  I hadn't heard of them either until they called me.  If you google Field and Stream Radio you will find their website.

Thanks and take care,

JT

I googled them.  http://compass-radio.com/FieldandStreamRadio/index.htm

Below is a list of the Washtington Stations running F&S radio:

KXRO-AM  Aberdeen WA 1320 AM
KWNC-AM  Quincy WA 1370 AM
KPQ-AM  Wenatchee WA 560 AM

I might be able to get 1320 AM from my house........I'll check tonight.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Rodger,

Hey great to hear from ya.  I called in a pile of bulls for Joe in AZ.  He missed two monsters.  He hit a limb on one and the other jumped his string.  He finally harvested a small 6x6 that I called in to 10 yards.  I got the whole call in on video, it is some great footage!!!!

Take Care,

JT

Congrats Joel you should be very proud, there are some very accomplished callers in that competition, well done and way to represent!!!

Is that video you shot of Joe the one with all the spiders? If it is you can count me out, don't like spiders, not one bit, especially ones you can put saddles on :o

Yep that's the one.  But we only saw one of those tarantulas, I guess there are lots of em down there.  If you knew how many big bulls were down there, you wouldn't let a little spider stand in your way.

Thanks for the congrats,

JT

Joel, since I was off on my info about the winner. (grin) Was it true that you were using the Monarch bugle this year? Just curious as to your setup in relation to the others. I know most of the callers these days but had never heard of you!  By the way, the info I had related was given to me by a good friend, I felt it was accurate! I was wrong, bummer! (grin) It sounds as if you're NOT a Pro Staffer for Rockie, but possibly considering it?
I know how these things can get a mite twisted at times, Rockie had asked me to be a part of his Pro Staff  several years ago but I respectively declined as I enjoy doing my own thing too much!! Good Luck to you & your decision & Congrats on a great job, you beat some great guys there!!

Well Joel Congrats!! I didn't know you but got an e-mail from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation stating your accomplishments. I thought I would throw it on a thread and figured someone would know you!! Way to go, and way to represent the state and fellow hunters. Be safe, take care, and keep calling. I am going to try one of the calls you used and practice as hopefully I will draw on of my AZ, WY, NM, or NV big bull tags.

Elknut,

I used Rockie's Hot Coaxer diaphragm for all of my cow calling sequences.  I use a Knight and Hale Ultimate Hunting Team Double Aspen for all of my competition bugling and close in hunting work.  For location bugling, I use a Glen Berry X-series Satellite bull diaphragm.  Each of these calls has a very specific purpose and they hit some very exact tones that I am looking for.  I don't know what the Monarch bugle is, sorry.   I use a tube of my own making consisting of a Carlton grunt tube and a very specific brand of Wiffle Ball Bat.   Have you seen a video of the competition this year?????   As for the Pro Staff thing, I am not sure what to consider myself.  I tend to use what calls I know will work in the field, not just calls that people in the industry give me.  I am willing to try anything but the calls have to meet some pretty strict criteria.  I am sure you follow the same lines in choosing your equipment.

Take care,

JT

Joel, Thanks! The Monarch is a very close resemblance to what Rockie & Corey were using there at the Comp. I agree on the calls thing as well, like yourself, I have my favorites for certain sounds I look for, even in hunting situations! I do not call competitively, but do a fair share of practicing! I have not seen the video but have talked to ones that were there including a couple of the callers. You had to be awesome to come out on top from such an elite group! Troy from the Mens Division is a good friend of mine, he & his family did very well, I believe he was very interested in the reed you were using for your bull sounds? (grin)  Congrats & have a great day!
