Helping a friend reload for 300 wby, reloader 19 and 22 getting poor velocities 2800-2900 factory rounds getting 3100 and change. Anyone getting good speeds with different powder?

The weatherby factory rounds are hard enough to match let alone beat as far as velocity goes. Typically the best you can hope for with reloading a weatherby is to get close with the advantage being to tailor the round for accuraccy. What bullet weight?

I get 3300 outta factory 180 sp's from my Ultra Light 300 Roy. Haven't loaded for it yet, but from what I understand, a healthy dose of 7828 is your huckleberry...

I agree with the IMR7828 for best velocity. I don't load for my weatherbys (.257 & .300) because I only shoot them a few times before season and then being a weatherby only once to kill, a box will last me a few years. The factory ammo is as good as it gets. If I shot them more I would reload because it would get expensive. For accuracy in other calibers I have always had good results from H4350 but with the .300wby 180gn you will be lucky to get to 3000 fps.

I load for a half dozen 300 wbys and we use 79 grains of H4831 and 180 accubonds it gives you a little over 3000 feet the max load for H4831 is 81 grains but all the extra 2 grains just seems to give you a little more recoil and you only gain 25 feet per second with the 80 and 50 feet more with 81 grains. If you get your gun to shoot at 3000 with accuracy thays perfect.

I thought with a 180 grain bullet in a 300 weatherby 3000+ fps was standard!
I have not shot my handloads through a device to know for sure.. but I was certain that the only time you drop under 3000 is when you load a 200+grain bullet. I will have to check into this...

We have conagraphed ours. They just say 3000 seems to be the magic number but its what your gun shoots best at is the most important. We had tried several different powders but H4831 worked best for us and was easy to find. Used fedral 215 magnum primers.

I was just going to ask what the barrel length was but got beat to it. Advertised velocities are typicaly from 26" barrels.

We have the 26 inch barrells but just did;nt think a deer would know if he got hit at 3000 feet or 3300 feet he would be just as dead just backing off a little recoil. Made a mistake and thought H4831 was the same load as IMR 4831 it blew my buddies hat off his head. I hunt with a big shooter and we load his 81 grains but there us noticable difference in recoil as compared to 79. Did;nt mean it;s everybody;s load it;s just what we load.
