Taneum tag help needed
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:14:13 PM »
I drew a rifle cow tag in the Taneum unit. This was a back up pick. I have been to this area once on my dirt bike when I was a kid.  :bash:
Any advice would be great.

Assume you mean a rifle cow tag. I've hunted in there for years. Typical zoo of hunters and they only let you use your cow tag the last 4 days so the elk are pushed around big time by then. It will be very dependent on weather if there is much in the way of elk in there other than a few resident cows. Pray for snow.

This permit will be an excellent reason to get out on a bike again or your SUV and rediscover this unit.  There is probably going to be a big herd on the lower end of the south cle elum ridge, but also a lot of shooters.  You might have to locate a herd days before the general season and keep tabs on them.  Good luck, I wish I had your permit, a hard earned cow tastes pretty good.

Mallardman has an antlerless elk tag as well for this unit. We were thinking of going up there this weekend to check the unit out. Tips and or advice is greatly appreciated, but i know he'll put his hours in pre hunt. Always does!!!
~  ~One of my favorite clothing patterns is camouflage. Because when you're in the woods it makes you blend in. But when you're not it does just the opposite. It's like "hey, there's an *censored*."”

Be come one with Nature......... Then Marinade it.

One moment you're flying south for the winter, then - BANG - gravy.

Just drive up and down Taneum Ck Rd with the other 95 of the 100 tag holders.  Look north up the hill.  You'll see one sooner or later.  Don't bother looking south.  Once they cross the road and the creek they won't be back until the snow's done flying.
Take a passenger.  It's kind of a pain to see them westbound from the drivers seat.  And the roads paved.  Won't even need to wash your rig after the hunt.   :chuckle:

I'm definitely not no road hunter, That's not how you fill a tag in this state, were not in Mt. or WY. where the animals out # the population of residence. Just looking for some good advice on some descent FS roads that get pretty deep into the area, I don't want to drive all over God's green earth. and diesel fuel cost to much. I typically hunt Davenport and Chesaw area. This is really close to home, And I have not spent much time up there. Sorry don't mean to thread jack or come across as an a$$. Thank you.

Just hunt off the elkhieghts exit you'll catch one heading east on the ridge.

You almost make it sound like you didn't want this tag but just put in for it because you had to fill your four choices. If thats true then it really upsets me.

and when you shoot her you will hear a LOUD..TINNNNGGGG!  :chuckle:

I spend most of my time in 340 but fishman and huntforelk give good advice, it can be feast or famine, weather usually helps

Well big Tex, let's just say it wasn't my first pick. So why would this upset you?

Don't worry about it allboy, as long as you appreciate the tag and try.  I always liked the Elk Heights area - you should be able to find something there.  If you go by the metal elk (don't shoot those  :) ) you'll find a road that heads up the ridge.  It's kind of a crappy road but certainly driveable.  I've seen elk up in there plus there're some areas of open timber that are kind of pleasant hunting.
