What am I doing wrong???????????????
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:49:15 PM »
So....I went out the other day early morning (started at 4:30am) and did about 7-8 sets about 15 to 20 min long. I did not here or see anything. Now usually I would just think they are just not in that area at that time. I have called in yotes before and have killed my fair share in the past. I decided that I would go out that evening. This time it was insane. I did not see any however they where howling like crazy. There must have been 5 different groups of yotes all around me (all this before I started calling). I started my first set with a rodent distress with the primos power dog and they all went silent :bash:. I moved to my next location and started to hear them again so I tried a pup distress and the same thing happend  :bash:. I moved to my third set (questioning all of my manhood and hunting ability) this time I tried doing a strait howl with my mouth call and nothing not even a bark. I figure one of two things are going on either I am loosing my ability or my drought is getting the better of me. Let me know what you think or better yet come out and show me what you can do I know there are coyotes there they are not hunted very much. Let me know.

I am still new at this and just got my 1st one this weekend but I would say one problem is using the Power Dogg. I tried to call in one I had spotted and he looked at the pup distress and could care less. So I did the cottontail and he cared even less and I KNOW he heard it. Then I used my mouth call and it was like a frickin magnet! I'm thinking about sending that damn power dogg back after seeing it fail first hand. Sure it was only one dog but I totally lost confidence in it after that and didnt even bring it out again. The only reason I am considering keeping it is for the howls but I may send it back and get the Spitfire.

I would blame the power dog too, but I have killed at least four using it. I think I will just try mouth calls for my first few sets then see how it goes. The offer still stands if anyone wants to show me what I'm doi g wrong i'm more than happy to take you to my spots.

Thats good to know about the power dogg - I was pissed and ready to can it, maybe I'll hang onto it a bit longer. Have you talked with BIGINNER at all? He is in the Pasco area and set me up with an awesome spot, they were fresh signs of them everywhere and I heard a bunch of them howling. Didnt see one or get one but it was like my 3rd time ever hunting and the wind was blasting too. I dont feel right giving up his spot without prior consent but you should get with him if you havent already - he was a big help to me! I dont think he will be hunting much until fall or winter cuz he said his allergies really give him a hard time. I couldnt show you what to do or what you are doing wrong but I'd go out with you next time in the Tri-Cities area if you want. Dont know when that will be but my dad lives in Richland so I'm over there a few times a year. Good luck, I'm sure its not you if you are doing the same thing thats worked before. Just a bad time of year or just plain bad timing (...luck...) - you'll be killing them again real soon.

I really don't need to be set up in a spot nor am I looking for some one to give up their spot I'm looking for some one to go with me to my spots. I have over 30k acres to hunt between Pasco and Sunnyside. I'm just lokking for some tips to show me what I'm doing wrong or let on to some hints.

:) I work for a city fire department,  there is a lot of farm, brushy area in the city , so altho I cannot shoot I go call it sometimes.
seeing a coyote and getting it to respond is a real learning experience. learning to call and kill is hard, the set up is hard to get right, so call where ever you can if you know an area where there are coyotes. even if you cannot shoot.
you will learn alot

I agree however I'm not a novice and have called them in before. I guess this is a poor topic for a forum without seeing what I'm doing. I have had good luck in the past I'm just in a slump  :bash:

i agree! mouth calls are where its at! also try grabbing a few different types of calls instead of the same old cottontail distress try thinking outside the box sometimes like something wierd like trying to make a distress call with a turkey mouth call, any thing with a reed almost you can make it sound like a an animal in distress, you hit the right tone for that coyote and it could come running in

You have to remember what time of year it is. For the past 6 to 8 weeks those coyotes haven't strayed far from there den.  I watch them nearly on a daily basis.  There hunting zone is about a half to three quarter mile radius, they're not going to go far from their pups.  Find that den, get within a couple hundred yards of it, make your distress call, then tell me it doesn't work.  They're just now starting to move out of the dens and get the kids into the hunting mode.  This will now change the hunting scenerio.  Good luck and good hunting.

VarmintVentilator is correct, it's a tough time of the year to try calling. You may get lucky and call in a young male that's out roaming around but the pups are still close to home and mom and pop are keeping a tight reign on the young. I was sitting in a den about three weeks ago, literally had my right foot in a vacant den, I gave out three long howls, waited a minute or two then got on the pup distress. Within seconds I had a dog come charging to the den, he stopped out about 175 yards when he saw me move and held up for a moment. I tried to get glass on him but was too late, never took a shot as he left in a big hurry.

I have been hearing howling coming from several groups of 4-6 coyotes every night and early morning and they are all still coming from near the dens. You will do much better in about another month when the pups are old enough to hunt on their own and begin straying off from the group. Pup distress is your friend this time of the year.
Checkin' wind and makin' smoke.
That's how I roll...
