When does the rut fall for you guys?
« on: July 04, 2010, 01:58:09 PM »
What time of year do you guys find the rut usually falls in the kitittas general area?  I know it is supposed to fall during early-mid September, but it always seems that it doesn't really get going to hot.  Is it more early October?  I know it has a lot to do with weather and such, but what would you say is the norm?

Last year it seemed to be during archery season.  Because I was exchanging some bugles.  However it doesn't usually seem this way.

Wow, your posting all over !   It varies each year. In 2008 the bulls in my area were alone through the whole season and just started to get going at the end of early archery . Last year they were already herded up and well on their way at the beginning of the early archery season. I don't know about all areas but that is what was going on in mine. I'd say as early as Sept 7 and possibly as late as Oct 7. I'm no expert, just what I've seen over the last 6 years. Mike

3rd & 4th week of Sept. is usually the peak. I've called in bulls as early as Aug.20th up to the second week of Oct. ;)

Concentrate on the 10th-25th everyear & you cannot go wrong! If they're not rutting in one area move to another, elk do not have calendars & the action will be hot & heavy as cows come into estrus! Findem!

I go purely on my own instincts, usually the urge to roll in mud is the first sign, but when my lips start curling and I start pissing on my belly I would head for the woods.....mid Sept when I got excited

Nothing better then a 7x7 at 30 yds grunting and pissing himself. The only problem was I couldn't draw a tag. :bash: But this year I drew a rifle tag, 602, 607 and 612, Sept. 20th to 25th, only one tag and I drew it. A bow hunter w/a rifle tag. :IBCOOL: I've waited 25 years for a big bull tag and my only experience is w/rockeymountian elk. This tag is for Roosevelt elk. :bash:

I've hunted that area for the last 20+ years and find that it usually starts some time during early archery.  Some say a cold snap will set them off, but it was like "90" degrees last year and they were herding up before the opener.
We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.
