I've been looking at new rifles myself and the Browning's feel the best to me.

Got to go with "other" on this one, I say go with a T/C encore. If you need more than 1 shot your doing something wrong and you can buy additional barrels for $250 new. cant beat that.

The Browning X-Bolt is an excellent rifle!  And I the price of Hunter model is down around $900, but then your looking at $200+ for a scope.  The Ruger M77 is a great rifle at $600 and has a the 3 position safety with is a bouns feature for me.

The Tikka T3 stainless runs about $600 and I do like this rifle, its light and easy to carry when in the field, and the MOA of 1" @ 100 yds is nice.  The trigger feels good, and I have yet to sell one with any issues.  But if you can extend your budget a little, I do highly endorce the X-Bolt.  I wrote a whole thing about it just a little bit ago at the link below.  Where are you shooping at?  I'll be in Cabelas on Sunday which is why I asked.  There gun counter is slamming on the weekends tho.

Yet another plug for Cabela's below.
They sell the biggest selection of pre owned rifles i've seen out side of gunshows!!  They also get a lot of new discontinued guns and last time I was in a guy was putting out a bunch of New Marked down Wby rifles with really good prices on them. I thought about picking up a little .22-250 priced at $400 but had to hold back, saving up for a TC Pro-Hunter at the moment.

I know a hunter who used a new Tikka. Before season he was bragging a lot about it, which is fine, folks need to feel good about their things. Then, the bolt became stuck in the barrel on opening day forcing him to use a different gun. I have no idea why it was stuck, but it was really stuck. Glad it was unloaded.
