« on: July 25, 2010, 06:35:27 PM »
I have drawn the only muzzle bull permit and have scouted the area past 2 wknds.  This weekend we were approx. 1 mile from where the elk were and would like to know if anyone has been successful in this area ?

It's part of the St. Helens Monument/Loowit unit.  Very rough country to hunt, but there are some nice bulls in there.  That tag has been available for about 4 years and I think only one tag holder has gotten their bull.  Most of the guys that draw the bull tag or antlerless tags for this area don't really know what they signed up for.  Good luck!!!

I hate to sound like a broken record, but why don't you tell us some more about yourself?  Lets hear some good stories, see some photos, lend a hand if you can.  I gave a guy some tips about the Margret last year, he'd posted twice, and after recieving my info, didn't post again, not a good experience.  Let us know who you are and I'll be more than willing to lend a hand.

The area is inside the monument.  Me and my dad (Spotted hand) have scouted this area the past two weekends . We both live near Ft lewis and enjoy hunting elk in south west washington, and hunting blacktail deer. Also enjoy fishing for whatever swims.  We have both hunted muzzle loader elk for a number of seasons, with success on mostly timber company land.  We were just looking for as much info as possible for the safest and most capable way of retrieving an animal out of the devils bowl.

The last person that had this tag came on here looking for info, he got some and we never saw or heard from him again. Only way to remove an elk from whittier is on your back... There are some timber company road to get you close, if i drew it that is what i was going to do. Drop in off one of the landings.

I see that my son has responded, however, this was my first experience with this site.  I heard about it from my son and I plan on visiting the site from here on.  I am retired U.S.Army(perm.med.) and will always have a sense of pride for our men and women in uniform.  I am originally from Pennsylvania and relocated out here in 1980 (US ARMY).  I have hunted and fished for over 50 years, from Maine to Florida, Montana and Washington.  I love hunting Blacktails, whitetails and elk.  My first and largest bull was in the top ten muzzleloader Roosevelts in the state.  We have an experienced group of 5 hunters and this tag elk area 5065 seems like a once in a blue moon opportunity.  We are usual pretty secretive about sharing specifics on our core hunting areas.  However, in situations like permits, I am glad to share any knowledge I may have regarding specific permit hunts.  We have taken bulls from the toutle and a number of cows from other permit hunts.

I hope this explains away any misgivings you all may have regarding my quest for information on this hunt.
