What calls sequence?
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:01:09 PM »
So I made my ecaller last winter and haven't got the chance to use it yet. Bear opens up on the coast this weekend and want to try it out but I'm not sure what sounds/calls I should put together on my mp3 player to call with. this is my first time trying to call for bear and don't know what sounds are the best. any help would be great! thanks everyone!

Whether hand or ecalls I usually start out with cow/calf calls as I near my stand location. Once settled in I will often do a few minutes of crow or jay distress. Then depending on the area (or my mood) I will use rabbit or fawn distress. Goat distress gets thrown in sometimes as well.

How much time do you allow between each different sound, and how long do you stay on one stand?

I call non-stop for 1 hour.  My favorite calls is very coarse and loud.  I like to start of low in case I slipped in close to one and get progressively louder.  Set a watch out in front of you so you can look down every once in a while.  Calling for anhour seems a lot longer, escpecially with a hand call.

I call alone pretty much all the time and have only used a hand call.

I like both rainshadow1 and bearmanric's calls.  They tune them raspy for me.

I've had them come into coyote distress as well.

yeah for bear a minimum of 45m per stand most time we are 1hr+ kinda depends on the stand. also the calls we use depend on the area we are hunting if you are in a area that has a ton of elk, elk calf calls can be very killer. they can come into about every call in the book kinda depends on the bear and its mood. i know of mt lions killer with goat distress, mix it up and see what happens. as fare as switch in call sounds it really does not matter. the bear does not think like us if we heard a fawn distress turn into a squeak we would be heading the other way. all they know is distress with that being said i try to pair the sounds. like if i am using a elk call i move to a fawn distress. kinda like yotes always finish with a distress to push them over the top and make them commit :IBCOOL:

thanks for all the info everyone.

my plan is to set my ecaller below my stand a ways away down a hill that i will be overlooking. Im planning to set the caller up with using my old smart phone as the media player. Then using a playlist with multiple calls with about 30mins of blank songs playing first to allow us to get up hill and settle in, I was hoping to come up with a sequence of other calls as we wait and hope for something to come in.

Does anyone see any flaws in this plan???
