Alaskan adventure

    Smokey and I left about the 20th of May ,hoping to go fly fishing some of the great rivers of the west. We first went into BC only to find out the trout fishing doesn't open until June  . OH that was after being searched thoroughly at the border!
We did see lots of wildlife on the trip through BC. Bears, Horses, Goats ,Sheep, Buffalo ,caribou, moose. They were eating the salt off the roads!
So we went on into Alaska and had to backtrack once to because of fires along the highway out of Tok. It was hard to get used to the 22 hours of daylight...so strange!
We went down towards Anchorage  but turned towards Willow creek  and stayed at the campground over the 3 day holiday. There sure was lots of people...There wasn't much fishing going on because the salmon weren't in yet and the trout would follow them when they did come in.So we wondered threw Danali Park and photographed the Griz, sheep and moose. Afterwords we went up into Fairbanks. At the Sportsmans Warehouse an employee told us where a good place to catch Arctic Grayling was  and we drove there the next day and got into some great fishing for them. What a beautiful fish. We didn't keep any as they are protected there and even if they weren't we wouldn't have. They said you have to cook them immediately or they get soft. ??
After fishing the Chena river we went south down to Homer. We passed the Russion River where we wanted to fish but it was still out of shape and the fish were late comming in. So we went down towards Homer where we wanted to fish the Ancor River. It was closed until thursday so we camped and went site seeing. HAd the best Pizza in the world there , I'm telling you! On thursday at midnight...Smokey went fishing for Kings! At 2am he returned and told me to get up and come get a picturs of his 34 pounder...It was still light at 2am!

welcome back, glad you had fun, and yes he is correct grayling are awesome to eat fresh, real soft and nasty when they are not. Nothing like a good grayling dinner when I was moose hunting up there.

You could only catch one salmon in the anchor river so the next day we drove out to Homer and he fished off the Spitt for salmon along with a whole line up of guys. Smokey was fly fishing and caught another big king on the same fly he had used the day before!.
In the next several days he had another 5 salmon on for a short time. It was a kick! We also went Clam digging two of the  days . The limit was 90 apeace but who wants to clean that many clams!
After a week in the Homer area we traveled north and returned the clam gun and  drove back up to fish  Willow Creek . We caught a couple 17 & 18 inch trout and some Grayling  there also.  We continued north and went threw North Pole Alaska, but not without stopping and seeing the raindeer and doind a little shopping...
After that we cut back south and fished the Russion River for a day. Most the people were fishing for the REDS (salmon) and sence they don't bite they are allowed to snag fish them...and it was combat fishing. We didn't get in on that one but fished from the less successful side of the river. It's a large river and you have to take a fairey across to fish the south side. We didn't catch any fish that day. From there we drove down the west side of Bc to Prince Rupert then turned inland and drove into Alberta . Driving through Jasper  National Park we saw goats, elk, sheep, and beautiful Mountains all over. We cut back into BC and looked at another river we wanted to fish but sisnt fish it, you had to have a boat. So we dropped down into Montana ( It felt wonderful to get back into the lower USA) EEEHAW. In Montana we fished the Thompson River and each caught several nice trout. After c couple days there we drove back to WA. And dropped down into Oregon and fished the Deschutes River. The river was in good shape and we caught a few fish but none of the famous Red Sides. We returned home from there just short of putting 9 thousand miles on the trailer and truck! I'll post some pictures tomarrow!

I love the anchor river, its a great little tide water fishery with some nice fish.  I spent a month in Anchor point when I was in highschool, just sport fishing what a memory!  You must have been claming in Ninilchick at clam gulch for razor clams, its amazing how many clams are up there, did you fish the river there, I caught many nice kings on the ninilchick at the mouth.  Cant what to see some pictures!  I sure you watched the tractors launch boats at the anchor into the ocean?
