Bird hunting around Ellensburg
« on: August 09, 2010, 06:47:10 AM »
My daughter is a CWU student and just passed her hunter ed class.  Once she gets settled back into classes and the dorm I’d like to take her out for a bird hunt.

What is the best bet for nearby bird hunting?  Doesn’t matter what the species is, I just want to get her started with something.

There are grouse in the forest east and north of Ellensburg, quail and chuckar west side of the canyon, ducks along the Yakima and Columbia river and pheasants on private land right around town.  Then you have Reecer creek hunting preserve just north of town.

Have fun hunting with your daughter.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

My buddy lives in Ellensburg, not far from campus and we use that as our "base camp" during the hunting season. We are mostly duck and goose hunters but there is alot of bird hunting in the area. I know of some great spots around cle elum to go shoot a bunch of grouse. As AWS stated, the west side of the canyon is good for quail. If you wanted to take a bit of a drive towards Royal City and Othello then I also know some good pheasant shoots in the area.

Thanks for the tips.  I’ve never hunted chukars so we can learn that bird together.

There's a pheasant release site on Durr rd.  and the hills around it have a decent amount of chukar in them.  Quail in the canyons and chukar up high.  I spend a lot of time chasing birds over there during the season.

They changed it from Durr to the Old Vantage Hwy near the windfarm last year.  You should be able to find the map to it on the WDFW website.

Too many people target shooting on Durr and screwing everything up.  It's unfortunate.
