blinds
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:14:15 PM »
Hello,

New to the site, looks like a good site with lots of info!

I had a question about blinds.
Does anyone know the laws on building blinds on public lands.  I hunt a marshy area on forest service land that I would like to erect a blind on. Nothing fancy just something to sit in to help conceal hunters.

Any info would be great.

Probably OK as long as you don't cut anything live to do it.  Just use dead slash and debris.  You will have to understand that some other hunter may find it and be using it when you get there during hunting season. First come first serve. You have no ownership rights.   :twocents:

Thanks guys, I just found something on another site from WDFW saying basicly the same thing.
I have no problem with others using the blind. Although I have never seen another hunter there.

Thanks again.

Is there something about not being able to bring in materials to build with (e.g. lumber)? I thought I had heard that but maybe not.
Everyone shoots three times per bird, right?

Building blinds, tree stands, camps -- no digging pits to create waterfowl blinds; no cutting trees or attaching wire, staples or nails to trees to build blinds, stands, camps; all non-natural materials used must be removed at end of hunting season; unattended blinds are available to public on “first-come-first-serve” basis; camp structures must be removed at end of trip

Thats what I found on the subject.

I hear a lot of guys complain about blinds they built on public land and then go to use it and someone else is hunting it.  Just remember if you build it on public land, it's free to everyone to use.  If you place it in the best spot on public land, it will probably get hunted 7 days a week, killing the spot.  I would use temporary blind and keep the good public spot as private as you can.   :twocents:

back when I was a kid and I hunted ducks liked they owed me money; I built a blind on public ground out of drift wood.  It got to be such a popular spot I would have to get there at two in the morning to procure it.  one morning I got there a little late and saw a guy just leaving his truck with decoys on his back, he saw me and I SH!t you not, he started sprinting to get to this blind first.
eventually this blind became so well used that someone of a higher power (WDFW?) removed it and filled in the pond in front of it, which was fine because this blind had become the biggest mound of empty shells and trash you have ever seen.

I have done that one morning I got to our spot a little late and seen guys riding bikes to the puddle we hunted I ran 1.25 miles cross country with deeks on my back to get there first! I was in a lot better shape back then  :chuckle:

We go to a popular spot every year. We hiked in one morning about 0315ish, found the pond covered with decoys. No one around.

We removed the dekes and put them in the bushes. When 4am came around, we set our decoys.
About 45min before shooting time, here comes some guys to the blind. We flashed our lights, but they kept comin. They came up and said they were there first.

I  reminded them you can't leave decoys out 2 hrs past shooting time, you can't set them before 4am.
They got all riled up, said I was full of sh**, threatened to whoop my ass. i reminded them they were in a hunting environment and harrassing a hunter is not legal, plus I had a loaded shottie next to me.

They said they would call their freind the warden. I said  okay :dunno:

Well along came the poachers best freind warden. he said we had to pack up and leave. i told him we were hunting legal and they were not. He threatened to arrest me and i said call WSP.

The trooper came out, he was pissed. Had to put his muck boots on.

He listened to everyone and told the illegal hunters to meet him at his car, and the warden to do the same. he wished us luck and left.

He cited the 2 for leaving dekes unattended for over an hour
leaving them out 2 hrs past shooting time,
 and setting dekes before 4am.

I had to go to the Millcreek office and file a report on the next monday. Needless to say the warden didn't have a nice day. He didn't cite his freinds and his boss wasn't happy.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

I know a guy that makes nice blinds in place for  the Elmer Fuds to find.... They are on the way to good spots, or in a place where the birds don't like to go and force them to the hot spot... If you build it they will come... the best blinds i've had were carved out of blackberry bushes with a pair of hand snipper.  :twocents:

I'm not sure I'd jump into blackberries with my waders on, but I agree with the principle idea...
