Getting closer
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:06:48 PM »
Had a bear very close last night at a honey hole...but the brush was too much for the old bow, so no shot.

Getting closer... ;)

I also saw 4 quail on the west side....i hardly ever seem them over here!

I saw a few quail once on this side but just thought it must be some domestic releases.  :dunno:  Its was near my dads house in Brush Prairie.

Good luck with the bear.  Are you filming the hunts?

Not filming professionally. If I get the chance, I film with my little pocket camera...I need to step it up a notch and get a decent camera to film with.

Went up for a quick hunt last night. Didnt get up there till bout 630....saw some BIG poo sign....nothing at the first gully....so I sit for a bit and decide to go check out where I killed a sow a few years ago.

Looking down the power line cut, I didnt see much, but it was near dusk and I was telling myself, "There is no way a bear isnt down there."

So I hop up on a stump for a better view....sure as shootin, a bear 100 yards away or so, eating away. I had my bow and it was getting dark, so I called to him for a bit...didnt even care I was screaming. Just kept feeding away.

So I decided I better try to do a stalk, as light was fading...

I get withing about 50 yards, but he had worked his way to the opposite side of a horseshoe shaped black berry bush...by now, it was too dark to really push it, so I backed out.

I'll be back soon. ;P If I had a rifle, he'd been summer sausage.

Got on him again tonight. Got to 52 yards.

I got in there a bit earlier today...glassed the area from the same spot as last night...wasnt glassing more than a minute and there he was, crossing an opening...then I lost him. I booked it down to where I could try to catch him.

I went about 40 yards into the cut and couldnt see or hear him. I climbed up a bit to get a better view....there he was, 52 yards infront of me, eating black berries at the tree line.

I was hoping he would come back out into the openings but he went into the thicker brush and parrelled the tree line. I was able to hear him about an hour later and I caught another glimpse of him about 100 yards away pulling down the black berries. I went back and repositioned, hoping to try to cut him off...I think I made too much noise. I didnt see him again.

His time is short. I wish I was using a gun, but I really want to stick it out with the bow. Here is a crappy video I took. Sorry for the lack of coolness in the vid.

if that was taken from the video on your cell phone, I want to know what phone you have  :chuckle:.
Have you tried using a rodent in distress call when he got close?  I may narrow the distance just a bit, and you can attach one of the primos squealer to your bow so you can call wile at full draw...however that would be a long time at full draw  :chuckle:

He doesnt seem to care about any of the calls I have thrown at him. Just keeps eating black berries. I tried to coax him the first time I saw him and then this last time. Barely even raised his head. Both times, it was rabbit distress.

I might try calf elk (lonely) sounds this next time.

Cool post!
