Mushroom Identification Books
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:16:26 AM »
A while back i was looking for a good identification book that talked about the different kinds of edible sh-rooms. I have  a recommendation... I bought it at the USFS office in Trout lake.
The books name is "The New Savory Wild Mushroom" written by McKenny , Stuntz and Amirati.. it is published by the UW press cost about 25 bucks and is worth EVERY penny... It focuses on mushrooms for the PNW  it has been researched by a UW professor and is very descriptive... It is a great book for picking mushrooms. It is great because it breaks down how to compare different kinds of mushrooms, includes  color pics and does a comparison for poison vs edible so you can easily compare the 2... Also includes what they taste like and common names they are called by... The UW researcher tasted nearly every mushroom in the book even the deadly admantiam ones.... gave him a slight head ache... he only had a little....  just thought I'd though out a great picking guide since i had been on the look out for one...

Yes, that is a great book. Though it is a bit dated, I have it and use it.

Some other great (and newer) mycology books include:
“Mushrooms Demystified” by Dave Arora is a great book for NW mushroomers.

A great one for the truck/pack is “All that the rain promises, and more” by Dave Arora.

If you are into Medicinals, “MycoMedicinals” by Paul Stamets.

According to the authors my copy is a redone/expanded version of the first, no recipes more documentation of the kinds of shrooms.  The other part i like is the entire book is that glossy thick paged magazine cover type paper.... It seems it was designed to survive the rainy PNW weather....

Right on. Mine is Third Printing 1964 so it is a tad dated.
