The largest live muley I have ever seen was on hwy. 20 at about 1:30am on our way to scout out the Malheur unit. He was with 4 does and they were trying to cross the hwy. That was in the Wagontire unit, that said, all deer numbers in the desert SE of Oregon are down, but if you do enough scouting before the season I think you can put a good buck on the ground. My step -father lives in Bend and hikes the N. end of the Wagontire area every other weekend, Glass mnt., Fredrick butte, he drew that tag this year and in August spotted a trophy, but never saw a buck while hunting that whole season! Then again you might stumble onto one like this.......

This buck was taken in the Steens mnt. unit

I haven't hunted the wagon tire unit but have stayed over there for a few days. i was out in the desert every day but seen no deer i did see a heard of antelope though. If you do decide to go i would get reservations at the little hotel/gas station early it fills up fast during deer season. The old cowboy that owns the place is a super nice old timer but i would definitely bring my own chow he has a little cafe but the food will make you run for the bushes all day. P.S. bring extra gas cans the only gas there is 50 miles away and there is no gas in wagontire the oldtimer stopped buying when the prices went up...very good people though.........spike

How many points do you have?
You will need 6 as a NR applicant for the N. Warner, 3 for Wagontire and S. Warner,7 for Steens, 4 for the Owyhee, and 6 for Beatys butte. Deer numbers are real low, you may only see a few deer a day or less. depending on your hunting preference, I think the deer numbers are much better and if you look and scout hard you can pull a good buck out of one of the abutting units like the Paulina, Interstate,Silvies, Malheur River or Beuelah. All are easier to draw and hold big bucks. Our group will be putting in for the Silvies unit if we do not draw Montana.
Send me a pm if you have more questions, I have been all over S. Oregon.
Jason

well, from what i hear you'll have to spend hours behind a spotting scope.  :chuckle:But then again that's our bread and butter. Never fear we'll come home with a nice buck.
