Lick Creek Help
« on: August 28, 2010, 05:13:06 PM »
Well where do i start... I'm from Oregon been elk and deer hunting all my life but never with a bow. i decided to start archery hunting after looking at the general archery season tags and realizing that i don't really have a snowballs chance in hell to get a good draw. so why not fall back on the archery general season in the lick creek unit? I'm looking to just fill the fridge up with meat i mean a big bull would be great but that's not what its all about to me. So Ive done a lot of scouting and put a lot of time in ( I'm trying not to be an "*censored*" by actually first hand scouting the area) with little success besides the occasional sighting of a cow or two every once in a while. infact i was there for the last 3 days chasing out literally every road to see where it would go and all the trails i could find to walk to get a better idea of the area and where i could find the animals.... i literally did not see a single animal besides a few turkeys and a big coyote. i found a promising spring not to far from big butte in the south east corner of the unit judging from an old map Ive got of washington id say it was hostetler spring  and was just wondering if that area is frequented by animals (the cattle in the area don't really help to pick out elk tracks) the best looking place i found was the Hard To Get To Ridge general area looked great no cattle present, a lot of lush grass and brush on the down slopes of most of the tops. one reason i figured i hadn't seen any animals was how bright the moon has been lately, i figured the elk had been feeding all through the night so they hadn't the need to venture out during the day.........the biggest thing this season is just trying to get my son his first elk ever and based on the regs. hes gotta do it with a bow so to be honest this season ill be posing as his guide. I'm not looking for any "honey holes"  or sympathy but more or less a point in the right direction. any help would be drastically appreciated.

 Thanks, Mike
