No berries yet above 4,000
« on: August 30, 2010, 06:49:55 AM »
I was up at 4,oooft to 6,100 yesterday and still no berry crop. There was a lot of green ones on the bushes but only a couple that were ripe. The good news is it started raining on me, so ma-by in a couple weeks the bears will be there. I was up in the greenwater area.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Found some very tasty berries and some very large piles of scat at about 4200' Sunday morning. South and even some south-east facing slopes. 8 deer and no bear.

I was at 4400' on Saturday 8/28 (South of Mt. Ranier) and there were a few berries around...It looked like it will be another week or two before they explode

We're getting berries here in the Blues at about 4,000 but lots are still green.  Gonna be a good year for the bears.  I just hope I can free up enough time to get out there...

I think it was the late frosts.....they held the plants "back", if you will. My plants around the house have done the same thing. The berries may come, but not in time before the early frost comes.

Not all the plants were affected, ones that were protected are fine, such as those that were in the wind, or protected in some other way. Find these spots, and you find berries. There are a few out there.

Of course, this only applies to this area, if you are having the same problem, maybe you did have the same problem, or another?

This is just my guess.

I tagged mine at 3900-4000ft after watching it feed on berries for nearly half an hour. The area I'm hunting has PLENTY of berries on the sunny side on the mountain...the shady areas are still a couple weeks out.

This is the best time, IMHO.
You know the bear are up there, so find the ripe patches they are concentrating on. Success may only be a few boot prints away.  ;)
I left it better than I found it...did you?

Don't worry about freeing up any time, I'll watch your berry patch :)

Just let me know where it is and I'll check it tonight ;)
