Caribou Outfitter for Spring ...prefer Baren Ground???
« on: March 10, 2008, 07:57:02 PM »
Anyone have personal experience with a Spring Caribou outfitter? Trying to find anything and everything to hunt before switching to insurgents in the fall!

You can do it yourself type in 26B in Alaska, meat is soooooo good during this time without the heavy fees of outfitter cutting into your wallet...  Cold as heck, (-20/-30 degrees) but sometimes it breaks (10-20 degrees) for decent weather.  I'm pretty sure the season goes till April frame check the regs on Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  Alaskan Air to Anchorage, shuttle to Fairbanks, Rent a truck from Fairbanks and hit the haul road with a bow, ABOUT 300 MILES NORTH.  Camp south side of Atigun Pass if it is too cold up north.  Lots of animals all over the place and very few people hunting them.  Buy a couple Wolf tags too.....  Bring your whites and stay near the Pipe Line for cover, the animals walk right under the thing and don't have a worry about it.  If you cross country ski, you can get back the five miles pretty quickly for rifle...  Again it is cold , check out the weather for Prudoe Bay, and it will give you an ideal of what to expect.  The regular hunting season begins in July, velvet big time... But the nastiest bugs you'll ever encounter...  We wait till Sep no bugs and semi mild weather without extremes either way.  If you go now, the capes are well worth it this time of year and plenty of Taxi's in Anchorage will pay a premium for good white manes with fluffy beards....  Besides, if you did, I'd be willing to take one off your hands real quickly......No horns but what the heck, right?  Lots of sheds though- And besides Bone needs some Sheds since I have misplaced or left behind some.

Check also for Rust Air in Anchorage, you'll fly across the inlet and land near area 19.  Last time I heard $700 for the flight, process was land, shoot and dress, throw back on plane and leave. A meat hunt only for atleast the residents, that could take three I believe.  It would be hard for you to get that much meat back without taking a bank loan to get it back to Washington.

hmmmm no bones right now?

Im certainly after antlers!

Do you think it could be done...do-it-yourself style with no guides for 3K ??

I know guides want like 5K just to guide plus travels

The last time I looked Caribou season was July 1 to mid May. That was up in the Brooks North of Arctic Village.  GMU 25/26?

Renting a truck is surely cheaper than hiring a pilot. I'm looking forward to going back up in June for a Photo Hunt.

I would have to second guess using rusts right now. I have never flown with them so it is nothing agianst them at all. the downer is the herd has taken a whoopin' down south. I would fly out of fbk for least $$ and kotz for best hunts. 3k for a bou is doable by $3.00 gas but as it goes up so does your flight costs. I am seeing close to $4.00 fuel now so you better get a rate soon.

there is/was a camp in umiat that was manned by guys from tri-cities. I have heard that aniak air guides (rob kincaid) is from the goldendale area........use your local connection ;)

Bone- No problem, going back this year again to my happy hunting grounds and will bring you back a few Newly Found sheds........  If I end up driving?????, I'll fill the truck....  Well maybe not fill but will be able to bring what I get...
