Never hunted deer in WY.  Had some antelope experience.  Been by private land,  would have been like shooting a Holstein at a dairy.  Have fun with the antelope.  Don't shoot one from the truck.  Stalk them.  You cant hunt them like deer.  get on your belly and crawl over the last bit of each rise.  a lot of times they will be just over the next rise.  TAKE  tweezers.  If you really hunt you will get cactus.  They are about 1 inch high with thorns about 2 inches long with barbs that break off under your skin.  They will fester out about Christmas.  Bone the meat as soon as you shoot it and get it on ice.  Otherwise it will stink and no one will eat it.  Also research what a good buck looks like.  It is easy to shoot an average buck.  Also hunt them all day long.  Just cuz it is hot they are still moving - especially in the rut.  If you are not used to the high elevation drink A LOT OF water.  This is key.  If anyone starts to get sick or headaches it is the elevation and dehydration.  Me and my son went through a case of bottled water (before graguar taxed it) in two days.  That is about all i have.  Good luck!

Private land for me too. No shortage of pronghorn. Crawling over that cactus is no joke! A leatherman tool is all I had so tweezers is a very good idea!
DeerThug pretty much covered it.

I hope you have already secured private land to hunt on.  We hunted near Sheridan in 2007 for deer and antelope.  Paid a small trespass fee to hunt private.  Luckily we drew our second choice as we had applied for further east 1st.  Found out later that there is very little public land around Gillette and the private land owners want a chunk of $$ to let you shoot an antelope even more for deer.  Our doe tags were for that area and we couldn't find one owner to let us hunt for less than $500 and that was to have them drive us out, point out the animals to shoot then get us off their land.  BLM land is hunted pretty hard as you would expect.  We ended up just bagging the doe hunt.

I hunted the area south of Gillette..near Reno Junction and Wright, WY..There is Federal land call the Thunder basin grasslands  Check that out..Also I called around to some of the local outfitters and asked if the had any trespass only fees areas..$400-500 bucks might get you on a sweet piece of private.

Also I hunted grouse up NE of Gillette on some BLM. by Weston, WY....so its not all private.  Look at maps on line to familiarize yourself with the area..  flashearth.com is a good place to start!  Also  go by the fish and game office..talk to the gammies..I do ever time I am out there..might lead to a landowner contact that allows hunting...you never know.  Good luck.

Good luck.

I've hunted just south of Gillette, on a ranch with lots of speed goats.... take your time and choose the one you want. (they are very hard to judge) Take good glass with you and scout for a big buck. Be prepared to shoot long range. If you can get a ballistic compensator scope it will help. I shot mine at 500 yard but this was on purpose, you can expect 200 to 300 yd minimum.

Also spotted some nice deer but didn't have a tag.

Ive hunted deer east of there about 30 miles and there is limited public land and ive noticed it getting more crowded every year.Just make sure you have a good map and knew which roads are public and which are not.1st year over there we thought we were on a public road due to no, no tresspassing signs and A farmer caught us and he was pissed.I thought he was going to have a heart attack he was so mad.we appologized and stated we would leave. He followed us out while calling the game dept.,warden caught up to us about 5 miles down the road and was extremely helpful and respectful. We explained why we thought it was public and he gave us the heads up on all the roads over there both public and private. So I think you should call fish and game and see if you cant find someone who will help with all the roads. Also if it rains over there get out of the prairie roads and onto hard gravel as soon as you can or you will be walking back to camp! Those roads will go from passable to inpassable in 10 mins. of rain.As for the hunting bring good glasses,  better boots, and zero your rifle at 200yds and know what it will do at 300-400.My best advice is walk into an area not accesible by road and glass and walk,or if you have enough guys you can a push through the draws setting someone at the head and some guys walking up from the bottom. This works well at midday when the deer are not moving.GOODLUCK
