Toutle Archery Bull Journal.
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:24:32 PM »
September 7 Day one.  Left out of camp O dark 30 took a skid road out the back of camp shortly after dark herd a Bugle then two then three, looked at the cliff that I had to descend down to get to where the bulls were talking.  Banzai got half way down the hill and started seeing elk down in a meadow type swampy area, in the bottom.  Got to about 100 yards could tell there was two good 5 points, and a 2X3 bull with a group of about 10 to 12 cows.  I called to the bulls to see if i could get one to break off the group. At which point I herd a bugle that sounded like a hunter, seconds later the woods just came apart.  I watched all the elk file out of the meadow except for one of the fives started to stumble, and bam hit the ground.  I walked down to the bull, and moments later a hunter popped out of the woods, I gave him high 5s, and asked if he needed help he claimed he had plenty at camp. And that was that.  I moved out and later got one more bull to spark up but was way off.  Headed back to camp..  For the evening hunt headed to an area I had scouted and seen good sign.  About  30 minutes into the hunt in the pouring rain got busted by what appeared to be 2 small 4 points, a 5 point, and a spike, ripped out a cow call and they all stopped, the only one I could have shot was the spike at 42 yards. go figure. I toyed around trying to get one to commit to my girly talk, but eventually they moved off.  Headed back to camp at dark and barbie up a big ribeye to celebrate the great day out hunting.  Man is it raining.  Till tomorrow gooooooooooooood night.

Hunter Dug. My cousin and I have the 2 riffle elk tags for the Toutle starting on Sep. 20Th. When your done with your hunt, I would love to get ahold of you for any info that you would want to pass on. Been down there a few times scouting, and have seen lots of elk. Have a great hunt. Hope you save a few big ones for me.

Sounds like a great hunt so far, looking forward to your updates.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Thanks for the report. I'll be down hunting with my partner who has a Toutle tag this weekend. Maybe we'll bump into you. Good luck.

September 8th Day 2. Took the morning hunt off had to run to town for a new propane regulator for the trailer, and dried out some cloths on the way out caught a 4 point bull standing in the road, he ended up leaving a vapor trail as he beat feet into the woods, shortly after that 3 doe's crossed the road not interested yet.  Got back to camp at about 1:30, geared up and headed out. Did a bit of calling on my 4 mile trek but did not hear a peep, snuck up on a cow and calf at 60 yards watched the little one suckle mommas titty for a while, in hopes that a big boy might show up but no dice.  Got back to camp just before dark.  Going to hit it hard in the morning no more days off. For those of you that will be hunting the Toutle later in the year I will give you all the info you need to include roads numbers and such when I have filled my tag.  Till tomorrow happy trails. :cmp1:
