Should I stick with 245gr or go for 295 gr??
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:08:39 PM »
Hunting elk. In modern, I hunted elk with 150 gr. Now with muzzle, I am comfortable with 245, but I am thinking about 295.
I like lots of velocity versus weight. Using 100 to 120 gr of xxx triple 7. Maybe I should try 140 gr.
Thoughts?

I will be using the Barnes 250gr TMZ for elk with 100gr T7.

100 grains 777 ffg with the 290grain Barnes tmz.   Killer load and very accurate with my bighorn.  I tend to like a bigger bullet with the slower velocities as I always think about busting through brush.  I may try a heavier one next year, but for now I'm happy.  i think of the weights less than 200 grains as deer bullets.  :twocents:

I use 245 for deer and 295 for elk.  I have shot 3 elk with the 295's not one of them took more than 5 steps after the shot.  I think it's funny the muzzle loader shop down in puyallup, that guy wants you to use the biggest bullet possible.  I just laugh at the guy.  Stick with what your comfortable with.  Either one will kill an elk just fine.  Good luck
