Deschutes Elk Unit
« on: September 18, 2010, 01:39:09 PM »
Anyone familiar with the Deschutes unit for antlerless elk? My son drew a permit for antlerless elk in January but we have no idea where to hunt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

definitley some elk in 666 but mostly all on private land.  get a fort lewis permit for the area off rainier rd and try to get as much land owner permission from everybody you can on military rd behind macntosh lake.  There is a cattle ranch called silver springs ranch.  has a nice sized herd on the property fairly consistently.  get permission there and you got it made

I can guarantee you that you will not get access to Silver Springs ranch to hunt elk unless you are willing to pay $$!  Like he said. try military rez or some of the land at the end of Vantine Rd. in Tenino otherwise getting permission is going to be really tough.  Everybody and their brother hits up anyone with more than a few acres for permission.  We use to get some good bulls off of the Weyco land at McIntosh until they sold it all for big dollar houses.  Now if you even look like you are a hunter you will be chased off.  Do some scouting before hand and DO NOT go at it blind!  Good luck!!

It's not a hunt I would apply for, and I live in the Deschutes GMU. Not a lot of area to hunt and there's no telling where the elk might be during that January hunt. With some scouting hopefully you will find them but there just aren't many elk in this area.
