Success for me and my Hunting Partner in the Little Naches.
« on: September 20, 2010, 12:48:22 PM »
Hey Guys,

Just thought I would share my story.

Sept 11th we had the Mountain memorial for my father up on his favorite hill and mounted the plaque in his memory. It was the first nice sunny afternoon without rain. The next morning was just as nice. Like the weather just paused during this time for us. We got out early and got all scented up and the normal routine. Me and my Partner were taking his cousin out that had a branched tag for peaches ridge. It was about 6:30am. We started some cow calling sequences and gave one bugle. After about 5-10 min of cow calling we saw a glimps of an elk making his way towards us. He was coming on a string. I saw him at about 70 yards at first. I thought he was a 2 x 2 when I saw the small split on one side. I drew back at 60 yards and was looking to see if he might be a Spike. Sure enough, to my luck he was a 1 x 2. He was still coming in unaware of our presence. My partner was also about 10 ft from me as well. I had my pin on him all the way. He was at 60, then 50 , then 30 then 20. I thought about shooting earlier but he was quartering to us pretty good. So at 15 yards and a slight quarter to me I took the shot through the shoulder and later found it went through the heart as well. We knew he was not going anywhere! I could not have drawn it up any better. I knew that my father had something to do with this. We celebrated and then found him 65 yards away. I have some pictures below.  Then on the evening of the 18th we were headed to go pick up my partners trail camera and on our way out about 100 yards from the gravel road where we parked, we were talking about the hunt and decided to just stop and call for a minute. We called for about 30 seconds and a cow came running in and I mean running! She skidded to a stop about 8 yards from my partner. He took one step back gave a cow call and shot her about 10 yards. While she was expiring I went and got the trailcam we had originally went out to get and we had her out of there in about 30 min. We actually drug her right over the doorstep of  Rugged Class Outfitters. We stopped and chated with Robin and shared our stories and good fortune with him. We went back to came in disbelief that we went 2 for 2 this season and knew my Dad was watching over us.
Good luck to the rest of you.

As far as pics of the cow go, He shot her with about 20 min of light left and when we got to her the mosquitos were SOOOOO BAAADD!!!! that we just quickly gutted her and drug her out. Pictures were the last thing on our mind as we were under attack!  She was a smaller cow so he was just glad to put it in the freezer. We started the celebration and did not get any pics of her unfortunately.

I don't think I would have put in print that your Buddy also shot at the same time hitting the elk. Ill bet someone could and may question the kill. Great looking elk and story

Thanks for that insight, but I assure you it was clean. He was unaware that I had shot the elk in the heart and his shot just nicked the elk.

Thanks pal for posting the story!  It was an amazing hunt for many reasons, and knowing your pops was with us, was an amazing feelingly that morning!

I greatly appreciate all of the work you put in to help me get my elk once yours was in the cooler!  It is great to have a hunting partner that would not let me rest until my tag was filled!!

I can't wait until we draw that tag and can actually kill one of those big bulls in "Hells Canyon"  :chuckle:!!! :chuckle:

Looking forward to to the late hunt and hopefully filling our deer tags  :IBCOOL:
