« on: September 21, 2010, 06:49:27 PM »
how would you guys set up while mouth calling and bow hunting bear? would you find a area where u can hide in but yet see a good distance 360deg around you? i dont have a tree stand just a primos ground blinde that stands up 3' but is 6' long. always bought a bear tag just incase the opportunity presents it self but nvr just went after them. would they come chargeing in or will they sneak in? how high are the dangers in doing this?

I set up in front of cover, so it breaks up my outline and gives me a little protection from behind if I'm calling by myself.  I like to use a small stool so I can draw from a seated position.  The bears will come in all kinds of different ways.  Big bears tend to boldly walk in, making noise, my opinion they are trying to intimidate whatever is eating whatever is screaming.  Smaller bears tend to suddenly just be standing there.  But they all do both.  I've called in and killed two bears that we just standing there....14 yards and about 9 yards, never heard them come in.  One was 230 and the other was 290.  Several small bears have just been standing a few yards away when I heard them or felt something looking at me.  Most of the time if you stop calling they stop, so once they get in bow range I like to draw and then stop calling, they usually stop and sometimes they turn sideways.  Little squeaks and moans from the call can re-position them...not always.  I haven't tried using a foxpro caller, but I would bet a ground blind, caller and a fawn decoy would be a huge advantage once they come in.  It's not really that dangerous.

No it's not.  If I can make it over that way in the next month or so, if you'd like I could try and call one in for you.  I think with bowhunting it's a little easier with two guys.
