necesscary river gear?

so far, in my exploration of new territory, aka the rivers... ive aquired a list of new gear... some of which i have, some i dont....


5 hotshots, pink, silver, black, purple, chartruse

various weights

various swivels

tons of spin-n-glows in different sized

tons of corkies

dick nites

hooks, leaders, line

floats, bobber stops

hoochies/squids in various sizes

spinners/spoons

pt wilson darts/salt water jigs

maribou jigs

yarn and flies of all colors and sizes....


what else am i missing?

How about a rod and reel? j/k 

Make sure you have some hooks tied up and ready to go with egg loops on them. Makes for much quicker transition when you loose your gear. They sell some neat roll deals that you can fit about 10-12 pre-tied leaders on.

If you are river fishing from the bank I would get rid of the:

5 hotshots, pink, silver, black, purple, chartruse
tons of spin-n-glows in different sized
hoochies/squids in various sizes
pt wilson darts/salt water jigs

No need to have that stuff without a boat IMO.
 I would agree with Swanny about the pre-tied leaders with the egg loops. I just use a 6-8" chunk of half inch pipe insulation to hold them.
I would also have :
a small spool of leader material.
pliers to pinch barbs and remove hooks.
maybe some more if I think about it.

down towards the mouth of the rivers in deeper water you could add buzz bombs to that list. they work really well! anywhere from 2 oz to 4 oz depending on how deep you are going and how heavy of gear you are using.

If you use the coiled lead ya need some snubber. Splitshot of different sizes. The herring caps are productive. Toothpicks can be used for bending herring or pinning your corky. Maybe a variety of plugs like tadpollys or different sizes.

Agreed. I have found the smaller size doesn't get snagged up as easy. The 4oz will fly FOREVER though!

yeah ok, so i think i have a good basic river box put together... however...

 ive been packing my flyrod in with me and have found it far more enjoyable, and acctually see more fish surface casting a fly than i do a jig or spoon.... so as a result i have been spending most of my time casting a fly... im considering leaving my spinning rods in the jeep...

 anyway, what are the more productive salmon steelhead and cutthroad patterns?

 i have a good reel with a drag system, 200+ yards of backing and an awesome 6wt reddington, some say it is a little light, as the people using 8-9wts tell me...  but ive seen a 45lbs lingcod brought up on a trout rod, so light weight gear isnt much of a concern for me, i know it can be done... but i do have to say, i havent enjoyed fishing as much as i have just casting a fly and letting it do its thing since the first time i used my boat...

i pre-tie 5-8 feet.... i use ALOT of line when i pre-tie, that goes the same for pre-tied hoochies/salmon leaders for salt fisihng.... i adjust as necessarry depending on conditions.... and yes, foam insulation pipe covers are my friend.... i have EVERYTHING on those, spoons, flies, hoochies, (now) corkies/spinnglows, you name it its pretied.... prep and organization is god in my box, because the no 2 rule of catching fish is repitition (the ability to quickly re-set gear after a fish is put on the boat- the faster gear can be reset the faster you can catch the just-caught fishes buddys)

i always have my gerber multi tool with me. when i do my leaders i have about 4 feet. i like to have around 6 pre tied setups. i hate going out and having to tie stuff up

i like to have at least 5 of everything pretied (well not spoons/plugs i cant afford more than 2 of every color).... snag one, cut one off, be nice give one to a newly made buddy, catch a tree-fish... whatever the case, its better to have more than you need, than have to spend 10 minutes to tie another... its extra work, but it gives you an excuse to turn on the tv, sit down at the table, and have a few beers... i have a small-er boat(21 feet), so id rather have it cluttered with pre-tied leader rolls, than have a bunch of random lines and spoons flopping around.... ive been thinking about making a revolving rack to mount on the cabin roof of my glasply, so i have everything and anything readilly available when i need it, when i want it....

my rules of fishing are preperation, repitition, organization, responsiblility, reliability, and respect....

hunting is a novelty(for now- ive only had my lisence 2 years), fishing is my passion....

I do 24 then trim if I need to..I used only orange and pink..I wont even bank fish anymore though,just a big battle

most people carry way too much gear on them.  i too used to carry around the 15lb fishing vest but got smart and just started packing along a pocket sized box or two most of the time.  if i'm exploring somewhere new i might bring my vest along but for the most part, i figure out where and how i'm going to fish and just set the tackle box up the night before.  plano makes a great little clamshell type thing that i swear by:



it has removable compartments so you can kind of tailor it to your needs, and latches in the middle.  typically, inside mine, i might have:

a couple of 1/8oz jigs
bobber stops/beads
swivels/snap swivels
split shot
a couple spinners and/or spoons
corkies

i'll stuff a leader wallet or two, a length of pencil lead(or slinkies) in my pocket, as well as a few bobbers normally.  that will serve your river fishing needs 90% of the time.

Big Toona is right, I am guilty as charged.  Reading this post I thought hmm is that me?  So I went out to the truck and grabbed what I took this morning to fish.  Here is a pic of the loadout.  Probably overkill.  Besides I finally got a digital camera so I am taking pics of everything!  Now if I just had remembered to take it with me fishing

The spin and glows can be good if the water is high and you intend to plunk with bait, attach a small squid body on the back of a spinner for a killer silver salmon set-up.....they will kill it.......the point wilson darts have there place in the salt water off a pier........
