Pistol hunting w/out holster?
« on: October 01, 2010, 05:21:22 PM »
I'll be carrying a short barreled Ruger Blackhawk .45 in the deer woods this season; is it a ridiculous idea to carry the pistol through the woods without a holster?  I'm not comfortable with it rubbing and bouncing on my side, and it seems that it would be a whole lot less movement if I just hand-carried it.  What is the common consensus on this?  Thanks for your input.

I've got the same gun in 45 and 41. I use a Bianchi for both. you don't even know it's there. Invest in a good holster. Yes, it'd be a little silly to walk around with an unholstered pistol all day.

Bianchi leather or the molded nylon?

It's leather.

OOPS it's a Galco B109T.

I love it. I believe i may have got it either from Midway or Cabelas. Can't remember.

here's a link from the Galco website. You can do much better on the price. Also the one pictured is obviously much bigger than the one you'd want with a 4 5/8 barrel. Just do a search and you'll find a vendor that sells it.

There are also many others to choose from but I do like this one.

Some guys like cross draw so that might be something to think about. Not to mention shoulder rigs which are SWEET!!

Thanks.  Found the model number; a lot of nice looking ones out there.  This one looks nice as well, but wouldn't be finished and sent before the season starts:

If your hunting with just a pistol, I see no reason to use a holster. I walk throught the woods with my rifle in my hands, no different with a pistol.

Gutpile- that's why I ask- there are indeed a good many individuals who have stated this same reasoning.

I know. my last post was to MHWash in response to his post. He's a little slow.

As for your question I really believe you'd get sick and tired of carrying a handgun around all day.

To me it's the same thing as slinging a rifle. Back when I was very very broke I carried the old 06 without a sling and it does get a little old. Especially when you get something down.

I agree with Gutpile on all of his points. When I hunt with my Ruger .480 I use a holster. Mines not a Galco, it's a "Gunmate" Scoped Bandolier holster. If your pistol isn't scoped then I would go with a Galco. I have Galco shoulder holsters that I use for conceal carry. One is for my Ruger P90 .45 and the other is for a S&W Mod 640 .357Mag. They are very comfortable. The wife uses the .357 most of the time and she carries it in a Galco that fits her.

i have a across the chest holster for my 454. it can also be wore on my side but it does flop a lot more. my cfp is on a sling and i like that a lot. But no its not to crazy of idea to just carry it.
