rust remover
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:28:09 AM »
i tried some rust remover from outers to get some light rust off my rifle. i broke it down and cleaned it after hunting today. shined a  flashlight down the barrel. there is rust in the front where the barrel is threaded into the reciever. there is no rust in the barrel it self. the problem is how the heck do you get that out with out un screwing the barrel from the reciever. any ideas. im thinking i should take it to a gunsmith and let him decide what to do. this part looks stainless when you look through it . the rust is around the edges. if i  dont get it out it will starting pitting. then im screwed and will have to probably rebarrel it. any one know of any gunsmiths in sw washington or oregon. dont mind driving aways to get it done right. is there some sort of spray i could put in there to make it come out easier. :bash: thanks

A fine wire brush or tooth brush with your gun oil of choice. Elbow grease is still a requirement.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Shorhair
I just dealt with the same problem. The surface rust I tackled with 0000 steel wool soaked with RemOil, in the action I used a bore brush and wrapped the steel wool around it so I could get up in there. Seemed to work pretty well.

Brownells.com sells a product called OXPHO-BLUE.
It eats rust instantly and if you can get to the area, rub it with steel wool and O-B to reblue it
Works pretty good.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
