Opening morning buck
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:22:22 PM »
Well, I got my buck opening morning at around 9:00. It was the third legal buck I saw but the first I had a shot at. At around 7:00 I saw a really nice, tall, heavy buck pushing some does across the wheat field above me (where I don't have permission to hunt). He looked like he was rutting and had his harem of does. There was another buck following them that was a 3x2 and it looked for moment that they might fight. I was hoping the bigger buck would make it across the field and cross the fence so I could shoot him before the guy that usually sits above me looking over that field got him. Well, as i watched the bigger buck in my binocs I saw him falter, dust fly up, then heard the shot. He circled around and went down. Then the does and other buck came down and crossed in front of me at about 200yds but never had a good shot. After that I seen some does, a forky, and a spike. Then around 9:00 all of the sudden there were several deer across the draw about 300yds away and one looked like a nice buck. First the binocs and it looked like a 3pt. Then the spotting scope. Yep nice 3pt. Then to the rifle scope. But I had to make sure I was on the right deer so back to the spotting scope. Ok right deer so  back to the rifle scope. Squeezed off a shot with my 6mm and the deer scatter except mine. It froze then stumbled and went down to the bottom of the steep draw I was hunting. A hard pack out but back in camp my 1:00 and deer season over for me. My dad got his second deer doe tag filled that evening.

We camped out in a field with no trees so had to make up a deer pole.

And when I got home my youngest daughter was having a birthday party. All of a sudden there are 11, 9-11yr old girls running out climbing up in the bed of my truck to look at the deer. Definately not what I would expect from the girls, most except my daughters had never been around dead deer before. They all seemed to think it was pretty cool so maybe it was a good intro.
