WWPHA Nov. meeting and Cougar calling seminar
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:31:40 PM »
The Western Washington Predator Hunting Association November meeting will be at Cabela's in Lacey.
The meeting will be on Sunday Nov. 14th. Meeting time is at noon.
Cabela's has asked that anyone ordering food to eat in the meeting room. So as to save space in the deli.

This months guest speaker will be Steve Tormala of Rainshadow Game Calls. Steve will be doing a seminar and question and answer about calling Cougars.
He will also have product for sale at the meeting. Hand calls, and his electronic call cd loaded with cougar vocalizations and a very informative tutorial.

There will not be a drawing for a buddy hunt this month as big game seasons are under way.

Should be a very informative meeting. Looking forward to seeing you all there. The meetings are  open to the public. Come check us out.

The seminar will be mostly stories, photos, video, and the talking points will revolve around Frequently Asked Questions. I have a good list, but if you have other questions, Please feel free to post here. I'll mesh them into the program.

Looking forward to it!

Since 99% of being successful is locating a cougar to call to or around, maybe you could throw in some biology.   :chuckle:  Can you tell I pretty much need a ground up education?

It's funny, Kain, but every question usually comes back around to some biology or established habit pattern. For instance, how late is too late to call after a confirmed location? Depends on the cat that was confirmed and what it was up to. Each scenario will be based on different age/gender/life status/activity/etc. So there's lots of discussion right there on mated pairs, denning, sub-adults with mom, sub-adults alone together, transient sub adults, territory holding adults of both genders, past prime adults who have become transient... So don't worry! It comes into play!

And yes, ABSOLUTELY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!! Let's pack it out and have a fun get together under the gracious hospitality of WWPHA!!!

I would like to go but it's bad timing. That's the last weekend of the westside elk season. I guess I'll just have to plan on filling my tag the first weekend, huh?

RainShadow1:  Thank you very much for putting on the demo.  I am really looking forward to it.  Is there anything I can do in advance to assist?  I will have a flat screen there for your use.

ADNAHOUNDSMAN:  Thanks Paul for the great posting.  Cant wait to see you and see how you are doing.

EVERYBODY  ELSE:  The meeting will have limited seating.  I will have them leave a few tables set up for those of you which decide to eat there, as they reduce the room rent if we do.  Also, I will request extra seating to be available for walk-ins that do not wish to eat.

Everyone is invited to attend..

Thanks Randy, if the TV takes RCA plugs (standard these days) I can connect the camera to it and do the whole deal from there. (It'll do HD too, if it has a HDMI or 5 RCA plugs for input.) I'll need a few outlets, so maybe a power strip would be handy. There will be some show & tell, with the recording equipment, e-callers, and etc. And I'll have two digital frames going with calls, knives, and hunting pictures. 4 available outlets close to me will do it.

Oh, and for a couple of the videos, I'll want you to be panning the crowd and just getting audio. I don't want them video'd. (Just a couple, not all.)

Here's a few of the suggested FAQ:

Chances of sucess for a weekender... 4 days per week... 10 days per season... etc
Anatomy, Bullet Placement
Hide field care
Consumable meat
Home Ranges / genders
Life cycle, habits, personality traits... biology
Vocals and other animals
Decoys
Sequences & reasoning for them
Cold calling vs hot calling percentages
Usefullness/Consequence of specific sounds i.e. Large Prey, or Small prey. Whistles vs Aggressive.
Calibers/Loads
When to set up on a track you're following

Please continue to suggest topics. Lots of these will overlap, lots will be answered by asking other questions. I'll have others that may or may not be suggested.

Rainshadow1:  I will do my best to remember all that yo need.  I will go check the TV monitor and see what it has for hook-ups.  I is a very new one so I am sure it has what you need.  As for the power strip and extension cord, should be no problem.  When it comes to time for me to stop filming your presentation and pan the crowd, just let me know in advance what they are and I will do so.  I was planning on setting up the camera on a tripod in front but can change that also to fit the needs.

Looking forward to your presentation.  It will not take long to cover Association business than the floor is yours...

Thanks again..

Talked to my Cousin in Florida today, Gonna talk to him again next week, didn't have alot of time this round, but he told me some pretty unnerving stories about the Florida Panthers he's been dealing with. He ran the same cat out of a pasture with a pickup truck, twice... In One Night!!! The land owner had to call in the Feds and have it trapped and relocated... to somebody else's ranch!

Brings up another point I'm going to cover, "Changing typical Cougar behaviors, overpopulation, loss of hunting pressure, and other causes for those changes."

If time allows, I'm also going to cover "Attributing rational thought processes to a Lion, or any other animal for that matter." It's very applicable in discussing certain behaviors and traits.

And, I'm going to have a book review and recommended reading list. I haven't read everything, but I have read several dozen books on the Puma. I'll give my opinions... tell you what I think is worth your time.

Any other ideas?!?!?

From what I have seen and read bobcats act very similar to house cats.  Do you feel the same is true of mlions?
I dont know if its on your list but what about scent control?

I went back to two old call-in locations and interviewed myself telling the story. Ended up with a few "don't do what I did here..." tips too. Will be showing those clips at the meeting.

Also went to the Game Farm and interviewed three Cougars on video! (Actually got three "whuff-rumble/purr" sounds from a cat that hasn't given me anything before.. .they'll be in the library someday!) I'll have those clips to show too. All raw video.

Also if time allows, I'll be showing two old call-in clips I've posted on the forums before, and my raw call-in kill footage from last December.

I hope I have some time to actually talk!!!

Hope I can make it. Still elk hunting. Seeing a few bobcat tracks here. Steve and I hunted a few hours in Arizona at the predatormasters hunt. San Carlos apacheindian Resavation cougar central. His calls sound just like a cougar whistle. I have heard a few. One was me calling coyotes behind my house and one whistled right behind me instantly. I was using lucky bird. Cougar calling is addictive. I have a blue mountain boot hunt this year.pick steves brain he knows about cougars. Rick

Any of you tech savvy guys know of a way to stream the video onto the internet?  A webcam or something.  I too would donate to the club for a copy of the taping, so let me know the details.

Webcast would be cool! I dunno of Cabelas has wireless...

So, I posted my book review section down under my Call-in Stories, on the call-in story page. I won't waste time on it at the meeting. More to come, but it's a good start.

I also went back up and interviewed myself at a third call-in spot. These are coming out really good, it's funny how you remeber everything about that stand when you go back and find the exact spot!
