Anyone ever load the Barnes XLC's??

I have a box of XLC's, which you cant even get anymore... and I havent loaded them yet. They are 168 grainers, for my 30-06. I seem to remember that since they were coated, you used less powder? But I cant find a load for them?

I'd prefer a load of 4831, but if anyone has a different load, will you let me know?

Years ago I tried loading them in my 30-06 (Unsuccessfully, gun didn't like them). If I remember correctly they actually use more powder as they are slicker and reduce pressure. So you need to put more powder in to increase the pressure back up to normal levels. But they should be close to the loads with the current TSX bullets as the rings and the XLC coating accomlish the same thing, by reducing pressures. I would look up the TSX loadings and start at the minimum and work up to see what works best, looking for over pressure the whole way.

With H4831 you really have to compress the powder to fit maximum loads in the case. I like 4350 better for the 30-06. I would think that somewhere around 57 to 59 grains would be max with H4350. I'm using 58.5 in mine with 165 grain Hornady bullets.

This is for IMR 4831 not H 4831. H 4831 is not listed.

OK, well the same thing applies. From what I know, the 4831 powders are a little too slow for the 30-06. Yes they will work but 4350 is better, IMO. You'll find that you'll really have to work at it to get 62 grains of 4831 in a 30-06 case. It will fill it all the way up and then you still have to seat the bullet.

If you look at the Hodgdon site, they have data listed for both H4350 and IMR4350 (since they now make both powders) but nothing for 4831. I looked at data for both 165 and 168 grain bullets. The highest velocities shown are for both of the 4350 powders.

They actually have a lot of powders listed . 4064 was the most accurate.

Yes, Hodgdon also has several other powders listed but the slowest is 4350. Another really good powder for the 30-06 is H414/Winchester 760 (same powder.)

I dont have any load data for the 06 but just wanted to say I love the little blue meanies.
I shot 100's of the 100gr's through my 25-05AI

I started loading 4831 years ago with 180's, then kept with it for 165/168's. I generally shoot 59-61 grains and get great accurracy... and velocities on parr with any others... just never loaded the XLC's, but I think you are right, the TSX's are the same cause of the rings..

Well, I only have one box, so will just load up 3 with 60 grains and shoot them. if they fly, I'll load the rest up!!!
