colville area deer numbers question
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:57:19 PM »
am curious who hunted the colville area for the general rifle or any weapon for that matter.  dad and i are headed up around there for the late whitetail rifle hunt just curious as to what the general concensus is; good year average year bad year. we already have a few spots of interest so im not looking to raid any honey holes, just what your impression was/is as far as whitetail numbers

They still have not come close to recvoerying from the previous two bad winters.  Still deer there, but the numbers are no where near what they were three years ago.

Last years reports were pretty dismal if you were not willing to work. My son and I were up there last year. There were deer but not many big bucks. He worked his butt off and settled for a little buck at last light.

It takes a few years for the deer herd to recover after hard winters. We had two in a row. Last winter was mild, but the deer numbers were down going into last hunting season, and hunting take took more. This means we had fewer adults for this spring reproduction. The 2009 fawn crop which was down provides the spikes to small 3 points, for this year. This years  fawns are where the new deer are coming from,  this year is probably the low point for adult deer 1 1/2 years and older. Next year we should start to see a increase providing we have a average or milder winter. It will be 2011 or 12 before we see a good population increase.
