can somebody run me the basics of coyote hunting?
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:11:19 AM »
my hunting dog is running with a coyote pack... i gotta get close to them to get a visual on my dog....

could somebody tell me how to do this? get some old meat, hang it from a tree, blast calls, and hide and wait? i have no idea where to even start on this one.... or if some experianced hunter wants to give this particular pack a try....

just whatever it takes to get my dog back.......
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

what kind of dog is it? well there are multiple things you could do it just depends on the area i guess. how are you planning on getting the dog back? shooting all the coyotes and hoping she just comes back or something else? ive made a big home made trap and cought a yote before. i made a big box with no bottom and cinder blocks on the top for weight.then put fencing on the ground under it so they cant dig out and propped it up with a good ole stick and did the fishing string trick so when they hit the string or grab the meat it falls you can have multiple strings. but i would use that as a last resort seeing how it takes some time to make. for more details you can message me. try a cheap predator call usually does the trick for a small pack of yotes. make a fire sit by it or in the woods away from it and call they get curious and come in. these are just some of the ways ive had luck with it :dunno:

Coyotes don't normally pack up. They may be pups. Is your dog male or female? I would look at calling them in and seeing what you can do. Just know that if you don't get your dog back it will problably get shot this season. I have shot a few ferrel dogs in my time and I'm sure others have as well. If you really want you dog back you better do something quick.

What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job." how long has your dog been with them?  Have you seen this pack and your dog?  Are you certain its coyotes and not feral dogs?  Your hunting dog unless it is a semi feral animal should be able to be called away from the pack or if its a bitch in heat you may have to just wait it out and figure she will come back knocked up like a bad teenager, then take her off to get a a shot.  I've had dogs that would play with a couple young yotes but they always would return when we called them and eventually the yotes got themselves into a bad spot and were shot.  Coyotes are often more a curiosity for domestic dogs now feral packs of domestic dogs are entirely different and really bad news in my opinion worse than wolves or coyotes because they dont fear man and they kill for sport .....

As far as getting them to come in I would use a rabbit distress call, you should be able to find one for $15-20 - and some sort of decoy also. I use a Quiver Critter rabbit decoy that I bought online at Bass Pro for like $25 and it really works great. If you buy one and dont need it I'll buy it from you when you are done. The yotes are very intrigued by it. (can I even use 'yotes' & 'intrigued' in the same sentence?? well anyway I just did!) I've had them come in and spook off but still come right back in because they couldnt leave the decoy alone without checking it out. Or maybe a fox tail on a stick and tie a fishing line to it or let the wind blow it around. A good distress mouth call is a Lil Dog and use the green mouth piece without the horn. It comes with two mouthpieces and it works for barks & howls too. I got mine for like $20 at Sports Authority and it works great. I've had them run to me in a bee-line after ignoring other calls. But I shoot them once they come in so I dont know what you do after that?  :dunno: There's my :twocents:

:)Jeepster, you are darn right my reply was smart alec, but, You give us no info.
Do you hunt anything? Do you have gear, rifle? do you have camo, have you ever hunted predators? It is hard to help you with no input.
Why did your dog run off? why wont it come to you? Do you want to kill the coyotes or trap your dog? Will your dog stay home if you catch it?

An experienced hunter would get much different advice than a total green horn. I am sorry your dog ran off, I am a dog lover. but I cant help you with no perimeters.

My co-worker lives in Granite falls, his neighbor, old lady, was walking her beagle as she does all the time and two feral dogs, rot and shep, busted out of the woods, grabbed it from both ends and pulled. There wasn't much left I hear. Feral dogs are bad news, get it back quick.

good luck.

If your dog will not return to you when called there is going to be little to no chance for you to retrieve your animal short of killing(legal) or trapping (Illegal ) in wash state .
I have a hard time believing your dog is running with coyotes .
Dispersal young males possibly but i have never seen this . If your dog is running with coyotes and not feral dogs , you wont have to worry about it for long , they will eventually kill it .
Basics , find out where they are , set up before first light  with an elevated possition, wind in your face or left to right or right to left ( not down wind at your back) sun at your back with something behind you to break up your out line.
Blow a series of 1 minute distress sounds on a mouth call sit still as a statue and wait . thats about all there is to it. or so i have heard.
