Options for Modifying this Model 70....

Ive got a mod 70, 300mag (not short, wish it was)... with a 24 inch barrel with this massive muzzlebreak/boss on the end.... this gun is just too big and heavy for what I would use it for... if I was just bench shooting or road hunting, it would be great, but for leaving the truck 3 hours before light and returning a couple after dark and putting on 10-20 miles... I hate it. Not to mention the muzzlebreak is so freaking loud that I fear shooting it, dam near even with ear plugs...

So....I want to lighten the load. I want to take the barrel down some and get a new stock that will lighten her up... Got ideas? Can I maintain a good shooting gun (say 6" groups) at 500 yards with a short barrel on a 300 mag???20, 21, 22 max inches....

Got any recommendations for stocks??

Don't think a shorter barrel means less accurate just less velocity.

Shorten barrel, mcmillan stocks are pretty light if you got some $$.

I'm sure there is someone out there that wants what you have and you'll probably be $$ ahead and have exactly what you want.

What year and style of Model 70 is this?

Geesh, not sure. Its not a pre 64. It has the mauser style bolt/safety and such...

I was wondering if it is a 1992 or newer "Classic" style - with the controlled round feeding.  If so, and it's in good shape, it'll sell for enough money to get yourself a factory gun.  Gunsmithing is expensive, and it usually doesn't make sense to spend that kind money on making a gun that a factory already made.  Barrel alone will set you back $300-$600, depending... others can comment more about the costs, but I'm seriously considering a conversion on my Model 70 Classic Featherweight and it looks like I'll be into it $750 pretty fast.  That's on top of the cost of the original gun. 
300 winmag is a very popular chambering.  You probably won't have too much trouble finding a new home for it and looking for your new(er) WSM.

Id get a lighter contour fluted barrel and a light weight stock.  Get a reloading manual and find a caliber you like that uses the same bolt diameter as the 300 mag... you could go with 7mm or 338 vary easy...

24in is going to be the barrel length with any magnum if you want shorter you need to go with somthing else.  

Im building a 6.5lb 338 win mag right now for the same reason that you mentioned above.. you can have your action skeletonized to save some weight as well...

6.5 lb 338 win mag... Ouch.  That's a shoulder bruiser for sure.
