513 South Ranier or 516 Packwood
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:15:48 AM »
My Brother and I will be staying in a cabin in Packwood for a week.  We've never hunted the area.  Trying to consider if we should focus on 513 to the north or 516 to the south.  Looks like more bulls are taken out of Packwood, but much more hunters.  Any Suggestions?  It looks very steep...where do you recommend looking in the rugged terrain?  Thanks for the input!

I was over there for the weekend. I saw  one 6x6, 2 4x4 and a few spikes. I set up a trail cam on my sisters property to see what comes in. Every square foot of her property is covered in elk tracks

Does your sister need to meet a nice man?

She bought 6 acres by Randal. recreation property all around her. All the neighbors are really nice and dont care if we hunt there property. There is one guy there that has 2 nice bucks (4x4 and a 3x4) and a nice herd of elk that are always eating his hay. I will be there this weekend and am hoping to get some good trail cam shots. Ill post what ever I get. There is a beaten up path coming out of the woods down to the river. Like a hwy.

focus on the packwood unit or try and find a way into the backbone lake area ever since the flood the bridge has been closed and the elk dont see the pressure they used to...that are used to get hunted real hard and produced some great elk.  good luck post your results.

Thanks for the advise PackwoodCoug.   I'll be sure to try and make it up to the lake if we don't get lucky in the Packwood Unit.  I had lunch with a buddy today that has pulled some bulls out of the Packwood unit and he's got me checking into a few places.  Hopefully in 5 days we can get some good looks in.  Thanks for your help!

I'll be sure to post a story and pics...either way it goes.  All I've though about for the last two months is this trip...should be a blast!
