Should haves...
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:43:44 PM »
Kicking myself this year.  Decided to hunt modern for elk this year cause my coworker talked me into it.  He backed out, mentioned on another post of mine but long story short, I had 4 cow elk almost run me down like a freight train down a thick trail within 20 yards.  First time I've seen elk that close while elk hunting in a long time. After they scented me, I watched them run back up that same trail but come right back down 40 yards away and walk right by me.    Of course, the area is bull only for rifle.  Any elk for bow in that unit... :bash:  Any other should haves?

Should not have missed a legal buck at 75 yards and should not have missed all 3 yotes while deer hunting. Also should have gotten in better shape for hunting season.

Just joking with you guys, don't take it personal....

Should have walked in the first gate, after spooking the Elk  AT  the gate.  :bash:
They didn't go far, and were not on other side of drainage (other gate)  :bash:

I should have nocked an arrow when I heard what sounded like an elk landing after he had jumped out of a tree, followed by dead silence.
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood. Hunted fewer days.  Hard to believe, but hunting from a base camp for 30 days straight in September is hard to do.  It dulls your drive, strains your marriage, and puts a big hole in your wallet.  Next years it hunting just the 15 or 20 best days for me.  I can say that I'm in damn good shape, though.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!
