Rust

I could make up a story blaming someone else but, it was my own dumb ass fault.  I live and hunt in Western Washington.  I have been out in the rain all weekend with my son chasing elk.  When I break apart my rifle last night, it has rust everywhere    down in the nooks of the action, around the trigger, spots up and down the barrel.

Please help me fix my stupididty

1.  How do I get the rust off without destroying the bluing?

2.  Will a gunshop be able to help?  How much would they charge?  I am having a hard time finding the tools to get intow where I need to.

3.  How do I prevent this in the future?  I thought I had it oiled enough.

Never case it after it gets wet.

It never is cased.  It sits in a gun locker.  A very cheap gun locker that is in no way air or water tight

I have used 0000 steel wool sprayed with rem-oil. to get into the action I wound the wool around a barrel brush and was able to get to the areas with a little work.

Use a Penny.

0000 (4 aught) steel wool and gun oil will take the rust off.

I have the same problem with my 30-06.  What I have learned is once you had rust on your rifle you take it out in a fog and the rust will be back.  No matter how much you keep it oiled.

I am going to be taking mine to a smith and have them completely strip it down and re blue it and I think the guy said seal it somehow to make it more rust proof.  Atleast I think that is what he said.  It has been 6 or more months since I talked to him.  Also going to have them do the fiber glass bedding (I think is the term).

I literally take mine apart every night and completely dry it out then re-wipe it with Barricade or some other silicone product then reassemble and re-wipe.  It never goes in any kind of case until after the season.  I have had a few spots of rust from years age but they never come back.  If I had the money I would do as Michelle is going to do just because I love my gun so much.

I have the action broken down and sitting in WD-40 right now.  When I get home, I'll scrub it up and hit it with gun oil and the steel wool then let it dry out and oil it really well.  Then call around and see how much it'll cost to do as Michelle is doing.

I wouldn't use steel wool.  I would use something made of copper.     (penny pun intended)

Brass or Bronze wool as will a penney will work never use steel wool. Also do not use WD40 it will cause the celulose in powder to change to gunk that will cause problems with the action. Somebody said Rem oil that is good but check all the others I use Clensoil (SP) for everything shooting and fishing.
