do you have a special permit there?  I thought white river unit was closed

They offer quite a few permits for the unit

Ah geez, duh...! Let me try that again. .....  :P

Is the National Forest land within White River unit worth a hunter's time for Elk hunting?

Depends on a lot of things, how hard you a willing to hunt, the size of bull you are after, how many points you want to put up for an area that certainly isn't the best choice.  I grew up hunting in the white river and have killed a half dozen bulls in the unit, would I put my 16 points up for it- hell no.  But I would put 1 to 8 points up for the tag if I could hunt in the rut, other than that the indians take far too many elk out of there.  That being said the backcountry is where I took 99% of my elk, and the indians don't hunt that far in.

There's still a few good bulls if you work for them.

I 100% agree with you on that, one of the biggest elk I've ever seen was in the white river a few years ago. The last year before they went to permit only, he was about a 365 to 370 bull.  The local gamie has it in his garage, it was found dead the next year on the road by a state patrol man.
