Who here has an AR in 6.8SPC?
« on: November 15, 2010, 01:14:08 AM »
Curious to know what your thoughts are in relation to the 5.56 / .223.  I know what it looks like on paper.  Can you tell that it hits harder when shooting though?

The hole looks 1.24mm bigger, the paper definitely shows a sense of having had it's ass whipped.  :dunno: What exactly are you asking?
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Can you really tell a difference in impact?  Visually noticeable terminal effects on material or game?

Of course! It's a bigger, heavier bullet that travels only slightly slower than a 223, it also costs about 5x as much to shoot it, if you are thinking of building/buying an AR stick with common cartridges. 223 is a great varmint cartridge if that is what you are thinking of using it for and in general if you can't kill it with a 223 then you have no business shooting it with a 6.8, yes you can use a 6.8 for deer but a .243 would be better.

I use 110 gr V-Max bulets in mine and yes, on my 300 yard steel target I can definantly hear the difference of impact. On coyotes I seldom have a runner but we still experience the occassional get away. The pelts are usually heavily damaged due to the disruptive nature of the V-Max bullet. Speeds have been in the 2500-2600 fps from our 18" barrels. I believe however, the 6x45 is a better choice due to the fact you do not need to change bolts or mags, and you can still shoot 75-85 grain bullets that will do very well and be better for longer range accuracy. My 6x45 is a dog killing fool with 65 and 70 grain boolits.

Yeah, I hear that the 6x45 is an excellent cartridge and might be an even better choice for military adoption than the 6.8 for increased lethality at longer ranges.

Just ordered a 6.8 from AR Performance.
