Best coyote bullet in an AR for 223 and 204
« on: November 17, 2010, 07:27:00 AM »
Hi Y'all.  Just got back from 2 days yote hunting.  Called 4 in, missed 3, 4th didn't get a shot at.  The whole time I was pondering, what bullet is best for my AR?  Currently, I'm shooting factory fodder in my ar, 52 grain ultramax.  Not sure what they load it with, but the opening in the hollowpoint looks more like a speer tnt.  I switched from using 40gr V-max handloads which has worked fine in the past, but I read too much about 40 v-max's having a "splatter" effect on bad hits, so opted for the 52 grain ultramax.  I have a 1 in 9 twist barrel, so am wondering what the best bullet out there for consistent kills would be on yotes?  I have some 65 grain gamekings I'm thinking of loading up for it...  I'm not worried about the hides.  Mostly worried about the feeding, accuracy, and consistent expansion to drop yotes.  Might switch to the 55 grain B-tip again.

On the same note, I'd also like to know what 20 cal bullet seems to work best in the AR as well.  I really am thinking of getting another upper in 204 or one of the 20 cal variants.

Oh, side note, I had one coyote I couldn't get a range on, figured it was 600 yards.  Just switched to a nikon 4.5x14 scope on the ar, and zoomed up all the way, didn't look like the yote was out that too far.  So I aimed at the 600 yd mark, let it rip.  Was 15 feet below the yote!  It sat there, so I shot again, and same thing!  3rd shot I adjusted, and was still low, but close enough to make it run.

I was using the 40 vmax but have had a few run off on me latly and Im not sure if it was me or the bullet. I have had a good run with them but three yotes running off isnt something I like. Ive began to question my scope too so Im hitting the range before the k16 goes out again.

Im switching to the 50 gr vmax and 52gr amax to see if they help. Ive been thinking of trying the noslers b tip cause they seem to be a little thicker jacketed.

I use the speer 52 in my 22-250, In the .223 the nosler BT 50 works good. For the .20 cal the 39 Sierra BK is excellent.

55 fmj, no damage and is cheap to shoot. You don't need the moly tipped high priced ammo. I've shot bobcats and coyotes with them with my AR and 700 Remington. Buy bulk, that's what I do.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

A good .223 bullet is the 55 grain Varmint Nightmare (softpoint) from Midsouth Shooter Supply. We buy them in the box of 2000 and they are dirt cheap, very accurate!

Carpsniper, I have a load worked up for the 52gr hpbt match sierra, how has it performed on yotes?  I'm a little worried using the "match" bullets on yotes, after sierra stating it is not a bullet to be used for hunting.  It is the sweetest shooting load for my contender, would be awesome if it could pull double duty in my black gun and my bolt gun as well!

wantto hunt , the sierra will work fine its very close to the speer i suggested , the hollow point in the sierra is much smaller then the speer and i found the expantion was not quite as good with the seirra but it still will get the job done as long as you dont hot rod it .

they put them down very very well ;) all my guns shoot them great! they will kill yotes just fine no worries  i shoot them in my contender 223 handgun as well. they are tack drivers in any gun that i load them for.
