A coyote taught me a lesson today
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:53:21 PM »
OK, a rather minor lesson, perhaps. I was making my way to my first stand this morning, up a farm road cutting up a hill, alongside a field of wheat stubble and the snow was slowing me down a bit.  It was maybe 8-12" deep, and fairly loose (and quiet).  After 100 yards or so, I cut a coyote track.  He'd crossed the road and went a few rows into the stubble, then paralleled the road in my direction of travel.  I asked myself "Why'd he do that?"?  Then I realized, the snow was thinner there. So I joined his track and made better time.

I followed fairly recent tracks in the snow (not more than 18 hours old) to three stands this morning, but didn't get any "takers" for my calling.

I look forward to hunting with Jerry tomorrow.
