Burnt Valley Buck

My family has been hunting up out of the Blue Creek area for over 45 years but this year when we went up to hunt the early season we couldn’t get up there because the roads were trenched. So we had to find a new place to hunt. My Uncles friend told us an area we should try. So on the 30th of October we went up and scouted. We found a couple of spots that looked promising but we did not see any deer just a lot of sign. My uncle and I always take the last three days of the late season off and hunt it hard.  On Tuesday the 16 of November we went up ready to give this new area a try. Wednesday morning I was about 20 yards from my stand and I jumped a deer. It was still dark and it happened so fast that all I saw was a tail running away. So I sat on my stand and waited for the sun to come up. About 10 minutes after daylight I heard a deer grunting at me at about my 9 o’clock. I slowly turned my head to see a buck about 30 yards away and he wanted to fight.  He was looking straight at me and was not offering much of a shot. We locked eyes for what seemed like forever I didn’t want to move and have him run off. I kept looking at his rack and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it but I knew that I could hang a tag on him. He started to turn back around to run off and as he did this I brought my new Rock River Arms 6.8 SPC up and put it on his should. Right as I did this he started running. I pull the trigger and he ran about 30 yards. I hit him about 3 inches from the shoulder on the left side. The bullet went through all the way to his right shoulder where the hide stopped it. The SSA 110 Sierra Pro Hunter TAC did its job and opened up perfectly. I was in total shock; I didn’t even have a chance to get cold or bored it all happen so fast. It took us about 3 hours to get him gutted and back to the truck. The meat cutter weighed him at 121 pounds without the hide and head. It turns out that he had 4 nice points on the right side and a 12 inch spike on the left.

Interesting buck, definitely a trophy with the strange rack.   I wonder if the strange horn growth is a genetic thing, or just a fluke?

Tman in the past three days I have wondered that exact same thing. Every time that I look at those horns I have another question. We think that he was an older deer and we have wondered if something happened to that side while he was in velvet or is it a degenerative issue or maybe this is what his rack has looked like all his life. There were rubs and scraps all over the hill side I was hunting. Was he the dominant buck in that area? If so how did he spar with only one good side? It is all very strange.

Definitely strange, but its really a cool looking rack..  Not many hunters will ever bag a deer with a rack like that.. You should be proud!
